Three Guyanese in Windies women’s team for S/Africa tour

Sabrina Munroe delighted with debut call-up

Guyanese Sabrina Munroe is one of three Guyanese and two debutants in the 14-member West Indies team to play in next month’s ICC’s Women’s cricket Challenge in South Africa.
The right-arm fast bowler, who play for Police Sports Club in local cricket and Pearl Etienne are the only new comers in the squad which will again be captained by Wicket Keeper Merissa Aguilleira.
Versatile teenager Shemaine Campbell who can bowl leg-spin and keep wicket and fellow Berbician Tremayne Smartt are the other Guyanese selected on the team which will play the Netherlands in their opening 50-over match on October 6.
Aguilleira will have her Trinidad and Tobago colleague off-spinner Anisa Mohammed as her deputy on the tour which involves five 50-overs games and two T20 matches for the regional side which reached the semi-finals of the last Women’s T20 tournament in the West Indies.
While Campbell and Smartt were members of the West Indies T20 squad, this is Munroe’s first selection on a regional team.
The talented cricketer who is employed with Digicel, the official sponsors of West Indies cricket, said she was delighted with her selection and was looking forward to working hard and doing well for the West Indies South Africa.
“I have been training hard and it has paid off for me. I hope to make my company Digicel, my Country and the entire Caribbean proud by doing my best to help us win in South Africa. I am looking forward to bowling on the quick, bouncy pitches over there and would like to thank all those who helped me with my cricket so far,” Munroe said.
Munroe says she is thankful for getting the time off to play for her country from Digicel.
“We have two newcomers to the squad – Subrina Munroe and Pearl Etienne. The two new players are both very good seam bowlers and performed very well in the recent WICB Women’s tournament in St Vincent. Both can also bat and they can be expected to make good contributions in the lower order. They have been knocking at the door for some time and have managed to work their way into the team.” said Chairman of selectors Clyde Butts.
Barbadian 41-year-old Pamela Levine has been overlooked for fitness reasons although the burly Vincentian Cordel Jack has been included.
Butts said that Levine is still a good batter who has done well for Barbados and West Indies in the past.
“Her general fitness worked against her on this occasion and for this tour we decided to look at some other options. Not making the team for this tour does not mean she has been discarded nor has she been retired. She is still part of the overall plans in West Indies Women’s cricket.” Butts continued. Guyana’s June Ogle-Thomas also missed selection despite some useful performances with the bat.
“The players are growing in experience and this series is being seen as part of the ultimate build-up to the next ICC Women’s World Cup. It is a young team, with a number of players in their teens and early 20’s, and we are looking to build with the future in mind. Even though it is a young team, the players are quite experienced at the international level and this trip will be a chance to gain more experience in foreign conditions”, the former Test off-spinner concluded.
