– Importer caught attempting to evade tax on potatoes
Authorities say that they have seized large quantities of uncustomed goods and even detained an importer who tried to evade tax on 2,200 bags of potatoes.
According to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), the operations happened between Thursday and Friday of last week and were conducted by officials of the Law Enforcement and Investigation Department (LEID).
The seized goods were under-invoiced in Georgetown, Mahaicony and Annandale.
“The seizure include eighty-six and one half (86 ½) case of Lizi Pai mosquito coil which were seized from a Robb Street, Lacytown location and another eight (8) cases of coil which were intercepted and seized at Annandale, East Coast Demerara. The importation of mosquito coils is restricted due to the nature of the chemicals they contain.”
According to the GRA, over the same two days, the LEID also intercepted 15 45-gallon drums of Lube Oil, 21 cases of Sting energy drink, four cases of Unoli cooking oil and five cases of V8 juices.
“Officials of the department also detained an importer who tried to evade tax on 2,200 bags of potatoes imported from Holland that had been undervalued, by submitting an invoice that did not reflect the true value of the item.
Due to the perishable nature of the goods, the importer agreed to pay the difference in duties and taxes which amounted to over $700,000 and the goods were subsequently released,” GRA said in its statement.
