Nets thought they had their first win in the continuation of the Georgetown Amateur Basketball Association (GABA) Division III League in the bag, but the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) under the astute leadership of Sheldon Howell, had other plans.
Stifling fourth quarter pressure defence halted Nets’ offence and gave GDF a come-from-behind win, which would definitely boost their confidence as the Pepsi-sponsored showdown intensifies on the refurbished outdoor Burnham Basketball Court.
Nets stepped into the last quarter of the game with a decent 11 points lead, which they extended to 18 points early in the quarter when they went up 40-22. However the game was far from over at that stage as the soldiers continued to battle on defence.
The full court press defence forced some errors in Nets’ camp and that was all that was required for the 27-0 run that GDF had to win 49-40. Royston James led the scoring for GDF with his 13 points while Collis Mendonca supported with 10 points.
Darrion Lewis had 17 points for Nets, who had past national junior point guard, Triston Tulloch and Fabian Johnson in their corner. The orchestration of the two senior players, however, was a bit overrated since it did not affect the outcome of the game.
In the other games, national junior and senior dunk champion, Tyrone Hamid scored 27 points in Ravens’ 63-59 points win against Melanie Patriots while Marlon Haynes had 12 points. Maxwell Thomas had 13 and Ashton Adams 12 points for Melanie.
Colours Panthers clawed their way to a 51-49 points win against Bounty Colts. Jermain Edwards scored 13 points while Ezekiel London added 12. Quincy Newton scored 15 while Dexter Walcott supported with 12 points for the Bounty Colts team.
