Dear Editor,
There’s an old axiom: Some people will never learn. I refer specifically to Mr. Robert Corbin and some of his cronies. Politicians must learn to be honest, unselfish, and work in the best interest of all the people, not only those who voted for them. As far as the 2009 PNCR congressional elections are concerned, let me remind Mr. Corbin and the likes of Lurlene Nestor and B. Beniprashad Rayman, that there are serious concerns about the integrity of the process that elected Robert Corbin Party Leader of the PNCR; and to merely dismiss the election results as credible, based upon Winston Murray’s graceful concession speech is a grave mistake.
Those who want to refute my theory for victory at the polls in 2011, insinuating that I am a political neophyte and a quack (“Gill’s examples do not support his advocacy for change” Kaieteur News August 31) must do so using their own name to discredit me, and not hide behind names like Lurlene Nestor and B. Beniprashad Rayman to do so.
I may be living in a foreign country, but I am 100% Guyanese as anyone else seeking higher office; and I am not going to be railroaded in being silent when so much is at stake. As I’ve said repeatedly, I pride myself to be an independent thinker; not a political lapdog drinking the kool-aid of some selfish and egoistic party leader.
How can I claim to have credibility with the readers when I blast the Jagdeo Administration for the “cake-shop” approach to running this country, yet fail to equally blast the opposition when they are wrong? As a proud and knowledgeable Guyanese, I will always articulate my views on the issues as it impacts the lives of my countrymen. I am not paid to shut up or to turn a blind eye to the steady demise of my country…my conscience is not for sale.
Whenever an opinion is given that questions the leadership of Robert Corbin, one can always depend on B. Beniprashad Rayman to come to his defence. At times, it is Lurlene Nestor. But while reviewing some of those letters written in Corbin’s defence, I observed they all have similar characteristics: 1. All are very passionate in his defence. 2. They both have the same though-process and writing style. 3. They both articulate with razor-sharp precision, the knowledge of events that only someone who actually experienced those, could comment on with such great specificity.
B. Beniprashad Rayman is quoted as starting her letter, “Dear Editor, I write in response to the letter captioned, Some straight talk…An open letter to Mr. Robert Corbin” and later in the same letter, she wrote, “Readers should remember…… (Mr. Harry Gill may have missed some very important pointers” Kaieteur News July 15).
While Lurlene Nestor started her letter, “Dear Editor, I respond to a recent letter, captioned Open letter to Mr. Corbin……” and later in the same letter, “Readers will however remember that…..(When will we ever collectively lay blame where blame is due?” Kaieteur News July 18). See any similarities in their writing style? Or is this just a coincidence.
Let there be no misunderstanding as to where I stand; my opposition to the ruling PPP/C Administration does not automatically transfer to my support for those who oppose them as well. I am tired of politicians saying one thing, and doing exactly the opposite when elected. Whoever wins my support and hopefully, that of most Guyanese, must earn it this time.
Guyana is a country with tremendous resources and potential, yet our people continue to suffer the humiliation of immense poverty and underdevelopment. This is precisely why we need someone at the helm with the ability to stop the bleeding of this economy; someone who will unite our people and give then hope for a better future for themselves and generations to come; someone that will bring credibility and respect to a new administration that is truly transparent and accountable to the people.
It is my hope that my fellow Guyanese share my passion for good governance, and will demand that their politicians bury their egos and work together to save our native land.
Harry Gill
