The TOPCO JUICES Junior Chess Championship Qualifier tournament begins on Saturday at the KEI-SHAR’S Sports Club, Camp & Hadfield Streets, Georgetown beginning at 3:00PM. Registration begins at 2:00PM.
The qualification tournament is especially important for junior chess players since the top seven finishers will be eligible to participate in the National Junior Chess championship scheduled for November this year. The current junior champion is Cecil Cox of Queens College. Senior chess players, who would be playing separately, are also invited to participate in the eight round event. The qualification tournament for the Senior Chess Championship will take place at a later date.
At a simple presentation ceremony, the sponsorship cheque was handed over to the local chess body by DDL TOPCO JUICES Brand Manager Jeranzee Marques who re-affirmed his company’s support to chess. He observed that with publicity and support from interested persons, chess will grow from strength to strength.
Treasurer of the Guyana Chess Federation Shiv Nandalall expressed gratitude to the official and he agreed that a sponsor’s support to chess is always critical to the game’s development.
The schedule of dates and times for all players is mentioned below:
For each round juniors will get 60 minutes per player while seniors will get 90 minutes each plus 30 seconds increment for each move. Scoring of moves is compulsory and players are reminded to walk with a pen. Trophies and cash prizes are at stake. For more information interested persons can contact Irshad Mohammed on 664-1650 or Shiv Nandalall on 225-8270 (office hours).
Playing days are September 4, 5, 18 and 19 for the juniors and the seniors will battle on September 4, 5, 8, 15, 18 and 19.
