Dear Editor,
In a court of law, the prosecutor meticulously chronicles the case against the defence.
Some of the evidence were proven beyond reasonably doubt, and some derived purely by deductions; after all, if you wake up one morning to find snow on the ground, you must assume that it snowed during the night even though you did not hear nor see the snow falling.
And when called upon to make their defence, the defence team turned up alone without the accused, and offered vague and pathetic reasons, pleading with the jurors to give the defendant the benefit of the doubt. When the jurors return after deliberations, you need not speculate what the verdict would be. Hypothetical though this case may be, there are a lot of similarities with the case against Synergy Holdings and its CEO, Makeshwar Fip Motilall.
Like the prosecution, the independent media has meticulously chronicled the case against Fip Motilall. They have produced credible evidence that clearly demonstrates this man has no road-building experience, no hydro-electric building experience, no project done by Synergy that was similar in size and scope, no road-building equipment until his recent purchase and no technical staff under his employ. Maybe a case could also be made for an appropriate change of name to NOtilal, but that’s a subject for another letter.
However, since these accusations surfaced in the court of public opinion, Motilall has been missing, or conveniently not available. In his defence, members of his defence team: President Jagdeo, Benn and Brassington, continue to give vague and pathetic reasons to justify giving him a US$15.4 million contract to build the Amaila Falls access road. The silence of Motilall is deafening. His refusal to defend all the accusations against him means only one thing…Fip Motilall is guilty as charged.
Makeshwar Fip Motilall cannot hide forever. He is accountable to the people of this Nation for the construction of a road that may pave the path to energy independence. Sooner, rather than later, he will have to face the press and defend all the accusations against him if he wants to be paroled. A sure way to achieve this objective is for him to name all of his accomplices in the Jagdeo Administration; but like some convicted felons, he may rather take the fall rather than rat-out his colleagues.
I commend the hard-working staff of Kaieteur News and SN for staying on top of this case, for despite the secrecy and media blackout by the PPP/C Administration, the Guyanese people can be assured of continuous scrutiny of this project and maybe, just maybe, the authorities will apply enough pressure and supervision to Motilall and company to avoid ever having to read those embarrassing words splashed across their front pages: “We told you so!”
