Stabroek and Mahdia Markets earned the right to battle for championship honours after they each defeated their respective opponents when the semifinals were played in the 5th Stabroek Warriors Sports Annual 5 a-side Futsal Football tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) Monday evening.
These two teams were scheduled to battle for the title in the final that were slated for last night. The results of that clash would appear in a subsequent issue. In the semifinals action Monday evening Stabroek Market won by a 7-4 margin from Mocha after Gerald Whittington and J. Lloyd each slammed in a pair of goals with support from G. Gritten, A. Murray and S. Austin who all sent in one goal apiece.
Mocha responded with goals from C. Frank and A. Abrams who scored 1 and 3 goals respectively. Their efforts were rendered inadequate.
Mahdia Market then triumphed over Bourda Market 3-1 after Jose Veto, Carlos Sellipe and Max Ramos all stitched in one apiece to advance to last evening’s final. L. Yaw pulled one back for Bourda but the time was inadequate to complete the job.
Fans were also treated to good football in a preliminary exhibition match between Ketley Street and Charlotte Street. The former team prevailed 2-1. Further, an American visitor, Charlotte Shaw, won the ball donated by West Indian Sports Complex after successfully piercing the goal in a shootout.
Meanwhile, the two losing teams, Bourda and Mocha Markets were scheduled to battle in the third place playoff last evening. Results of these two encounters will appear in tomorrow’s issue.
The team winning last evenings’ finals carts off $200,000 and a trophy donated by the beverage giants Banks DIH Ltd. The runners-up would pocket $150,000and a trophy while the third and fourth place finishers would be awarded $100,000 and $50,000, respectively. There would also be special prizes for the Most Valuable Player, best goalkeeper and the most prolific goal scorer.
