Residents within the vicinity of the Old New Amsterdam hospital are complaining of the indifferent attitude of the relevant authorities after a decomposing body was left at the dilapidated facility’s mortuary.
The police were immediately contacted when residents noticed that the corpse was being taken into what is left of the mortuary which is void of a roof and some parts of the wall, and is a haven for all kind of animals.
Undertakers from a nearby funeral parlour later arrived and applied chemicals to the body to kill the stench that had nauseated nearby residents.
Kaieteur News later learnt that the body was that of Keshwar Madramootoo, 42, a fisherman of Kilcoy Squatting Area, Corentyne, Berbice, who was reported missing.
According to his wife, Savitri Mangru, the man left home around 16:00 hrs on August 26 and did not say where he was going, after they had a quarrel. He was found around 10:45 hrs on Tuesday 31 in a channel aback of Albion. The wife has been questioned as investigation continues.
In the meantime, residents living close to what is left of the old hospital are calling on the authorities to desist from storing bodies at the location.
They say that it is an wholly unhealthy practice. They are calling for an investigation into this latest occurrence to be launched immediately.
