$5 million contract awarded for replacement of filtration system
By Franklin Wilson
Hundreds of swimmers among others who are regular users of the Colgrain Swimming Pool, Camp Street, will have to endure a few more months of inactivity with the closure of the facility to effect necessary repairs.
Scores of swimmers and parents have been enquiring what is the status of the work and when it would be completed. Speaking with Kaieteur sport yesterday, Minister of Sport Dr. Frank Anthony noted that he quite understand the frustrations being felt but the repairs to the facility is necessary at this time.
“We have recently awarded a contract to Fifee Construction Company for the replacement of the entire Filtration System which has to be ordered from overseas and then installed. They will also be doing repairs to the Deck and do the Driveway.”
Dr. Anthony further disclosed that Fifee Construction has three (3) months in which to complete the contract which was signed three (3) weeks ago.
“We do not want our athletes and others to swim in unhealthy conditions so that is why we had to take a decision to effect repairs at this time. So we are asking all to bear with us as we refurbish that facility for all to enjoy.”
Kaieteur Sport understands that the old Filtration System which was acting up for some time was never changed since the Pool was commissioned back in the late 1950’s. Just about two years ago, some of the underground pipes were replaced.
With the new 50m Olympic size Swimming Pool still in the latter stages of assembling and the limited time available to swimmers at the Castelani Pool, one can understand the frustrations that will face the many clubs who depend on the Colgrain Pool to run their programmes.
Many others will also have to endure the wait including ‘Persons with Disabilities’ (PWD) who frequent Colgrain to help with their rehabilitation.
Castelani Pool is only available to the GASA and its affiliates from 05:00 to 10:00hrs Monday to Fridays and during the school term, coaches and swimmers leave around 07:30 due to school and work. No time is available in the afternoons at Castelani.
A number of Schools have also been requesting the uses of the Colgrain Pool to prepare their athletes for the upcoming Guyana Teachers Union Inter School Athletics and Swimming Championships. For the first time in many years also, the usual July/August Swimming Camp which attracts hundreds of participants did not come off.
The 50m Pool is expected to become operational in late September, according to Dr. Anthony.
