– attackers flee on motorcycle
The manager of the Sweet Water Lounge night spot had to be rushed to hospital on Monday night after a man posing as a patron threw a corrosive substance in his face.
Lennox Benjamin, who owns the recently-opened D’Urban Street establishment, was attacked while sitting outside the premises.
His assailant and an accomplice escaped on a motorcycle.
While Benjamin sustained injuries to the face, his vision does not seem to have been impaired.
Although the businessman said that he did not know his assailant or the motive for the attack, an eyewitness said that the suspect spoke briefly to Benjamin before dousing him with the corrosive substance.
A female eyewitness told Kaieteur News that she had observed the attacker and another man drinking beers by the bar at around 22:30 hrs.
The woman said that she later saw one of the men standing near the doorway.
According to the source, Benjamin asked one of his staff to serve another patron and then went outside.
Kaieteur News was told that Benjamin was sitting outside when one of the two ‘patrons’ walked up to him.
The woman said she overheard the man say “You must stop (expletive) around me mother,” before throwing the substance on Benjamin.
According to the eyewitness, the man then ran to a motorcycle, where his accomplice was waiting, and the two rode east along D’Urban Street.
The injured night spot manager rushed inside and washed his face before heading to the Dr. Balwant Singh Hospital with a female companion.
He was admitted to the hospital before being transferred yesterday to the GPHC.
Benjamin is a re-migrant and only opened his night spot a few weeks ago.
When Kaieteur News visited him, Benjamin declined to go into details about the incident, citing fears of a second attack.
The businessman also said that he could not identify his assailant.
The incident comes in the wake of two similar attacks just three months ago.
In May, someone threw a corrosive substance in the face of Shazaad Shaeed, 48, after luring him outside his Supply, Mahaica, East Coast Demerara home.
Also in May, Pretipaul Jaigobin, the former Assistant Treasurer of the Guyana Cricket Board, sustained facial injuries after someone threw acid on him while he was at an East Coast Demerara beer garden.
