The Annual Hearts of Oak Masters Teach them Young football summer camp ended recently with a presentation and prize giving ceremony at the Prison Officers Sports club Penitentiary Walk, New Amsterdam. The camp which is in its tenth year was held at the All Saints Scott’s Church Ground and began on July 19 and ended on Friday August 20 lasting a period of one month.
The programme was held five days weekly, Monday-Friday from 09:00hrs -13:00 hrs. During the sessions over 115 youths between the ages of 3-19 years participated which included both males and females. They were taught the finer points of the game which included both theory and practical.
At the practical sessions, they were shown the various ways in receiving, passing, shooting, dribbling, and heading, overlapping, Goalkeeping and throwing. Taking on the Thigh and Chest among other points were also taught. The youths were also schooled in the 17 rules of Football, Discipline, etiquette, good table manners and general education with Physical fitness being an integral part of the sessions.
According to coordinator former national player, Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey, the main aim of the programme was to have the youths better able to appreciate the rules and regulation and improve their knowledge of the game, improve their overall skills and understand sportsmanship and have a better human relationship with others.
At the end of the camp the youths were presented with certificates while the more outstanding participants were presented with special gifts. Most Outstanding in attendance was Dereck Taylor who received a football outfit, one jersey and short pants. Trevor Simpson, who had the best attendance at the camp, never missing a day, collected one jersey, one short pant and football boots.
The youngest participants, John Andrews and Dwayne Alleyne both received school supplies to enable them to attend school in the new term. They received two shirts, two pants and socks. Delon Alleyne, Winston Lewis, Andrew Lewis, Calvin Johnson and Colin King also received gifts for their outstanding performances during the camp.
The more outstanding players are expected to be selected to participate in further training and a tour to various parts of the country at a later date.
According to Humphrey the response was good and at the end of the sessions the youths were spoken to by Humphrey, Senior Prison Officer attached to the New Amsterdam Prison, Carl Graham and headmistress of the All Saints Primary School Kowsilla Tahal, who encouraged them to continue training and return to their respective teams and share what they learnt.
The Youths were told that education is the key to success and they should not forgo their education for nothing, they should put education first.
Also during the camp the youths were presented with a quantity of football and track boots by the Members of the New Amsterdam Primary and Secondary School Foundation (NAPS) local chapter on behalf of their overseas counterparts. The gear included a quantity of Football and Track Boots and other memorabilia.
