Even as his murder remains unsolved, the mother of seven-year-old Dacwaun Sutherland is convinced that a man in her community holds the answers to her son’s death.
The man in question is an individual who police had detained shortly after the schoolboy’s body was found submerged in a canal in ‘B’ Field, Sophia.
An autopsy revealed that someone had sodomised the lad and submerged him in the canal.
Death was due to drowning compounded by compression injury to the neck.
Zon Park, the victim’s mother, said that
allegations of sexual molestation of young boys had been made against a man who lived a short distance from the murder scene.
She is convinced that the same man can assist the police in their investigations into her son’s death.
Ms. Park’s theory is that the killer concealed her son in his house and then disposed of his remains when night fell.
According to Ms. Parks, police had detained the suspect and searched his home. He was subsequently released with instructions that he report to the police daily.
Police sources confirmed that the same individual was detained but that investigators have found nothing to link him to the crime.
Police had also questioned five Sophia youths about Sutherland’s death.
Dacwaun was Ms. Park’s only child, and the woman, a security guard, said that she had always kept a close eye on him.
But at around 13:30 hrs on Wednesday, June 30, he visited his mom’s worksite, and she sent him home alone with some perishables that she had bought at Stabroek Market.
She also instructed him to return.
When night fell and he failed to return,
Ms. Park made a report to the Turkeyen Police station but continued her search into the night.
The following day, the child’s body, clad only in his briefs, was found in a canal in ‘C’ Field, Sophia.
Persons in the area who spoke to this newspaper said that the child was last seen alive some time after 17:00 hours on June 30.
One woman said that she saw the boy around 13:30 hours with two water bottles in his hand.
Another woman said some time after 16:00 hours on Wednesday she noticed the two water bottles floating in the canal.
