Today is D-Day for the President’s /Jefford Track & Field Classic at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground today starting at 2:00pm and a packed programme is set to be highlighted by the sprint events.
The meet, the brainchild of Edison Jefford and President of the Amateur Athletics Association of Guyana, Colin Boyce, will see the cream of the country’s athletes on show for what promises to be a highly entertaining evening of athletics competition in the Mining town of Linden.
Fans are also expected to come out in large numbers as is always the case at sporting events in Linden. The home support will be major for the Upper Demerara athletes as they battle their counterparts form Police, the Guyana Defence Force and the combined bunch from the National Park.
With attractive cash prizes on offer, there is all to gain and serous cash to lose for the athletes on show, setting the stage for an explosive meeting.
The male 100m contest has attracted the best, which includes Michael Saul, who just Friday smashed the 17-year-old record, battling Keith Roberts, Rupert Perry and Quincy Clarke in what promised to be a humdinger of a race.
Leave out the women and that could be considered a big mistake. With leading female sprinters Alisha Fortune, Nadine Rodrigues, Leota Babb, Neisha Alleyne, Kendra Zephyr and Tiffany Carto facing the starter’s gun, maximum entertainment and competition is promised.
The 400m is another key event with Trevor Scotland, who has distinguished himself in recent times, out to maintain his dominance. He will be challenged by main contenders Phillip Drayton and Winston George.
Several sponsors have thrown their support behind the event led by Digicel. Fans are indeed in for a treat form 2:00pm today.
