Kaieteur Sport yesterday reported that National Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan, his West Indies teammate Narsingh Deonarine medium pacer Paul Wintz were hit by Dengue Fever but Manager of the team Carl Moore says the illness is not as serious as first thought.
Moore, who will travel with the Guyana squad to South Africa as the South Americans hope to emulate Trinidad and Tobago’s wonderful performance in last year’s competition in India, confirmed that the three players were unwell but said that the Dengue Fever scare is no longer a concern.
“I read about it in today’s (yesterday’s) Kaieteur News and I am happy to say that both Narsingh and Paul are almost fully recovered while Sarwan is still a bit weak also almost fully recovered,” the Manager said yesterday morning.
Moore said that checks revealed that the players had come down with a very high fever but not Dengue as first thought.
“I am not a medical person but maybe it could have been some side effects from vaccines the players took this week….I don’t know…but they are OK now. Sarwan in particular wants his local fans to know that he is always committed to playing for Guyana and did not want to miss last night’s game since he and the entire team knows how big it was for the Guyana public,” Moore added.
Sarwan said he was still feeling a bit weak yesterday but said that team spirit is high and he was hoping to be in action tonight in the second match.
The Guyana Captain said that it was good that T&T agreed to come and play the practice matches since they provided high level competition as his team get ready for South Africa.
“We leave around the 5th of September and our first game is on September 12 so after these two games (vs T&T) we hope to have a few match simulations and fine tune what we have being doing with Coach Seeram and Roger Harper. We won the Caribbean Championship and everyone in this team is prepared for tough cricket in South Africa,” Sarwan said.
“I always make myself available to play for my country since it is an honour to represent your country and the team spirit and unity in this team is the best I have experienced since I started playing for Guyana. We are going out there to do our best and make Guyana proud and I honest believe that if everyone play to the full potential and believe in themselves we can go all the way,” the Skipper said.
“There is a lot of hype of grudge match and all of that but I don’t think the results of the games against T&T will be of any major importance to our performance in South Africa. Of course we are playing to win but these are also practice matches and we are using them to try out different things and I think the large crowds could be a good thing especially for the younger guys since the crowds in South Africa should be big,” Sarwan said.
The team should be focusing on improving their skills and the mental aspects of their cricket during this week and Sarwan said the support from Guyanese at home and abroad has been overwhelming.
“Since we came back (from Trinidad) everywhere you go people have been wishing us well and as a team we intend to make the entire region proud in much the same way Trinidad did last year,” Sarwan concluded.
Guyana play their final practice game against T&T tonight from 20:00hrs at Providence and another large crowd is anticipated.
