The Differently-able Athletic Club’s Annual two-mile Fitness Walk set for today from Two Brother’s Gas Station to Mocha Village on the East Bank of Demerara has received support from local beverage giants Banks DIH Ltd.
The Annual Fitness Walk now in its 12th year, is coordinated by national amputee walker William “the Conqueror” France. Banks DIH presented Aqua Mist Water to the organizers at a simple ceremony on Thursday at Special Events Department on Durban Street.
Special Events Manager Mortimer Stewart said that his company is supporting the event for the fourth time. “We are once again pleased to be associated with this Fitness Walk, because it is always very well organized and we are confident that a wide cross section of Guyanese will participate again this year.” Organiser France said that over 100 walkers are expected to take part and once again he has extended an invitation to Prime Minister Samuel Hinds and Director of Sports Neil Kumar and Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Sport Steve Ninvalle who are regular participants at the event.
According to France, prizes will be awarded in the following categories: Male and female open, male and female over-50, youngest male and female as well as male and female with disability.
France said the race will also be used as a warm up for himself and three other athletes who will be attending the Terry Fox Run in Canada next month.
The other participants will be Dennis Burns (amputee), Indy Ramnauth and Yvonne De Abreu (wheelchair).
Starting time on Sunday is 06:00 hours.

3rd Annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial KO Football
Cougars play Strike Force; Mahaica to battle Pistons United today
Rivalry in the 3rd Annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial knock-out football competition organised by the Berbice Football Association (BFA) will continue today at the Burnham Park in New Amsterdam with a double header today.
East Demerara’s Mahaica Determinators tangle with Pistons United in the main attraction at 16:00hrs. Pistons will be led by Earlan Hinds and Eon ‘Sugar Boy’ Farley with the winner of this clash moving into the semifinals.
Opening the afternoon’s action from 14:00hrs will be Cougars FC spearheaded by prolific striker Winston Benjamin; engaging the ever improving Strike Force United in their second full season of competition.
Strike Force boasts a number of quality players including brothers Leslie and Michael Amsterdam.
