AGAIN AND AGAIN!!! Headquarters and Guyana respectively join in celebrations yesterday at the Police Sports Club Ground after retaining the two titles at the annual Guyana Police Force Athletics Championships.
On the heel of a few solid and consistent performances, Guyana and Headquarters (HQ) retained the respective titles yesterday on the final day of the Annual Guyana Police Force (GPF) Athletic Championships at the Police Sports Club Ground, Eve Leary. Both Guyana and Headquarters dismissed their nearest rivals from even posting a challenge in an uneven competition in the International and Force contests respectively. Guyana garnered a total of 218 points while Headquarters had 622 points correspondingly.
The host country’s 218 points was good enough to put them ahead of Trinidad and Tobago’s 110 ½ points and Barbados’ 61 ½ points while Headquarters topped ‘A’ Division’s 333 points as ‘B’ Division finished third with 219 and ‘C’ Division fourth with 179 points.
The country and HQ built their dominance around solid performances from Trevor Scotland and Nadine Rodrigues, who were among the outstanding athletes yesterday. The pool of athletes that represented the two teams was too good for their opponents.
Scotland, for instance, brushed off hints of a challenge from Edward DaSilva and Larry Marshall to win the 400m final while Rodrigues returned 26.3 seconds to win the women’s 200m ahead of Akita Alves (27.3) and Dellie Williams (28.0) respectively.
Williams won the female 400m race in 1:03.1 with Rodrigues second in 1:07.4 and Ashonda Mentore third in 1:17.0 in that order. HQ also won the male 4x400m race in 3:31.4 as ‘B’ Class finished second in 3:37.0 and ‘C’ Class third in 3:44.0.
Patrick King entertained the massive crowd at the Sports Club with his classical form in the Invitational Men’s 200m race, winning in 21.7 seconds as Alton Seaforth returned 21.8 seconds for second and Dellon Reid 22.5 seconds for third.
Winston George topped Michael Saul in the 200m ‘A’ Class final in 22.0 seconds as Saul had a time of 22.2 seconds for second and Trinidad’s Shane Dyer 23.0 for third. Okeme Stewart placed first in the ‘B’ Class 200m in 22.2 seconds with Rawle Scott second in 23.0 seconds and Mark Edwards third in 23.1 seconds.
