If you had seen the clinical way that Mandessa Moses had disposed of Alisa Marques and the classical moves she employed on her way to a lopsided shutdown of Margaret ‘Chicho’ Walcott, then you would no doubt predict an easy win for her when she tackles Sharon Ward in a catchweight encounter when the Guyana Boxing Board of Control in collaboration with the National Communication Network and the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association presents the seventh edition of the ProAm boxing card at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) tonight.
On the contrary, those that were privileged to see Ward in action would admit that she is no slouch. Late last year she faced Veronica Blackman and the latter fighter looked a sure winner as she employed all the tricks in the book, supported by a two fisted attack that convinced even Ward’s staunchest fans that their fighter would have surrendered the decision. They were to get the shock of their lives when Ward suddenly found a renewed bout of energy and literally bulldozed London on her way to a come from behind victory.
These are the two fighters that will face off in the main attraction of the 8th edition of what has now developed into an eagerly awaited boxing fiesta.
The difference between this bout in comparison to others is that both principals have demonstrated absolute respect for each other. What is apparent, though, is that when the first bell sounds both fighters would want to snatch the initiative. With just four rounds to get the job done, this should be a slugfest from gong to gong and fans would not want to miss it.
Dexter Marques and Rudolph Fraser clash in an eagerly awaited match up that could provide fans with the kind of action to whet their appetites in anticipation of the main affair. Fraser is the stronger puncher but he would have to employ all his wits and skill to corner Marques, known for his elusiveness. If Fraser comes in fit and if he has fully recuperated from his knockout loss to Troy Lewis then one can settle down for a good match that could go either way.
The Errol Trotman/Mark Austin shindig should be interesting even though one would want to give Trotman the edge. Austin is quickly notching up a reputation as a spoiler following two convincing victories over seasoned fighters, Cecil Smith and Shawn Pyle. He will have to call on all of his wits and courage if he is o cross this hurdle. Trotman had taken a lengthy layoff from the sport which could act against him but his experience should tide him by. Notwithstanding this, it would not be a walkover since Austin has already proven that he could disrupt the best laid plans.
Leon Gilkes and Theophilus King battle for the second time in as many months and the latter fighter came out the worst for wear in the first encounter.
He has promised to reclaim his lost glory in the second encounter. This should be a slugfest since both principals pack vicious punches. With both setting their eyes on a knockout, fans may want to visit the arena to see the live action unfold. Those unable to visit the venue may tune in to NCN 11 for a blow by blow account of the action. Bell time is 20:00hrs sharp.
