– granted $350,000 bail
Twenty-year-old Christopher George appeared in court yesterday afternoon to answer a charge of causing death by dangerous driving – the death of 19-year-old Christopher Crawford.
George appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court. The accused, who was not required to plead to the indictable charge, was represented by Attorney-at-Law Hukumchand.
According to Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford, George caused the death of Christopher Crawford while driving vehicle PLL 6787 in a dangerous manner.
His attorney made an application for bail claiming that his client was not a flight risk and would make good on his next court date. Telford made no objection to the bail application which was granted by the Magistrate. Bail was set at $350,000 and George is scheduled to reappear in court on September 30.
In an earlier report on the accident which occurred in the wee hours of August 22, last, it was noted that George was the driver of the Toyota car in which Crawford was a front seat passenger. They were on Mandela Avenue in the vicinity of the National Cultural Centre when George apparently veered into the lane of an oncoming Honda CRV driven by Shawn Gonsalves.
After the collision, George allegedly fled the scene, meanwhile Crawford was pinned in the wrecked Toyota car that George had been driving. After rescue services managed to free the badly injured Crawford, he was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The other occupants of the two vehicles were all injured in varying degrees.
The 19-year-old Crawford was a resident of 111 Miles Mahdia, while George resides at North Ruimveldt Housing Scheme. George and the passengers in his car had reportedly left a show at the National Stadium not too long before the accident.
