Police last night escorted a controversial businessman to seek medical treatment for wounds he sustained allegedly at the hands of persons he fleeced out of hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The man was handed over to police at the Brickdam Police Station by persons who alleged that he had conned them of their money by pretending that he was in a position to import cars for them. Kaieteur News understands that the phony businessman had collected monies from several persons who waited in vain for him to procure vehicles for them.
According to reports, the businessman stayed out of sight for several weeks while his clients tried to contact him with a view to recovering their money.
Yesterday, he was seen by one of his clients, who along with others, inflicted a beating on him before handing him over to the police.
A source at the Brickdam Police Station told Kaieteur News that the businessman indicated that he was involved in the car importing business with a partner. He is claiming that he had entrusted the money to his partner to procure the vehicles, but the partner has since disappeared.
The businessman is presently being held at the Brickdam Police Station lock-ups.
A close relative of the businessman is presently before the court, facing charges relating to similar allegations.
