New York based Guyanese businessman Dave Narine yesterday continued the tremendous support the Guyana 20/20 cricket team is getting from the Guyanese community by pledging half of a million dollars to the team’s perpetrations for next Champions League tournament in South Africa.
Narine, who hails from Number 60 Village in Corentyne Berbice, had been residing in the USA for the past 25 years where he is a leading importer of Guyanese food products and a massive fan of Guyana and West Indies cricket.
Narine who owns the Dave West Indian Fish Market and Grocery and the Dave West Indian Imports Inc in New York, presented the cheque to Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) President Chetram Singh after the team’s morning practice session at the Guyana National Stadium.
The businessman said that he has always assisted the GCB in the past and is even thinking of traveling to South Africa to lend moral support to the Ramnaresh Sarwan led team.
“After Guyana’s wonderful performance to qualify to represent the West Indies in South Africa I felt compelled to give a few dollars towards the training of the players for this important tournament which will put Guyana on the world stage,” Narine told Kaieteur Sport.
Guyana face Trinidad and Tobago at the Stadium on Saturday and Sunday in two practice matches and Narine said that since he did not know of these matches early enough he will miss them.
“I am leaving on Friday and flights are a big problem so I will have to miss the matches here this weekend but I am confident the boys will give a good account in South Africa and make Guyanese all over the world proud,” Narine added.
Singh thanked Narine for his contribution and disclosed that the money cost of preparing this team for the South African mission will run into millions. He said it is pleasing to see people coming forward with support since not only will it make things easier for the Board but it also shows the players that Guyana is behind them and should inspire them to do well.
Guyana’s participation is a tremendous boost to Guyana’s fledging tourism industry since Television coverage of the event will expose Guyana to billions of people around the world, many of whom don’t even know Guyana exist.
The GCB says that another donation from a Guyanese group in New York should be made to the Board shortly.
