Robert Scotland, was yesterday not required to plead to the indictable offence of murder, when the charge was read to him by Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton, at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The allegation is that Scotland killed 30-year-old Rawle Mentore on August 20 at Kurupung Backdam on the Takuba Trail.
Scotland, who appeared dazed, had his left arm heavily bandaged yesterday when he appeared in court. He was also unrepresented.
Police Prosecutor Shellon Daniels made the application for the accused to be remanded to prison.
That application was granted by the magistrate, with Scotland being remanded until September 29. The matter was also transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that Rawle Mentore was shot dead after inflicting several chop wounds on his alleged killer. The incident occurred on Friday last.
GWI checks on low pressure in city
Low pressure in several sections of the city has caused engineers at the Georgetown Shelter- Belt treatment plant to scrutinize whether it’s the cleaning of a reservoir or a major undetected breakage that is causing the fluctuation of the water pressure.
According to an official of Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI), consumers began experiencing low pressure last week when the cleansing of the conservancy began. However, technicians are trying to ascertain whether work on the reservoir, which collects water from the Lama Canal has affected the gravity-flow of the precious liquid.
While the low pressure has gotten worse during the past two days it was disclosed that GWI is optimistic that engineers would fix the problem this week in the swiftest manner possible.
Residents in several areas in the city had complained of the fluctuation of the water they are receiving through their pipelines.
Wakenaam housewife fears for her life
A 44-year-old housewife who lives with her four young children at Caledonia Village, Wakenaam, has expressed fears for her life and property after receiving threatening telephone calls. To make matters worse in terms of security, the woman’s husband is working off the island.
Mrs. Chandrowtie Latchmanan told this newspaper that about 19:00 hrs last Saturday she received a call on her cell phone, with the caller, who she claims sounded like a male, threatening to rape her and her 13-year-old daughter and burn her house. The petrified woman immediately secured her doors and about half an hour later someone began shaking one of the doors on the bottom flat of the two-storey house.
She related that the same person continued calling her phone the following day (Sunday) and two rural constables along with neighbours were present when one of the calls was made. The phone was set on “speaker” so that those present could hear what the person was saying, and the call was recorded.
Mrs. Latchmanan suspects that the caller is a young male villager who lives not far from her, and whom she saw jumping over her fence shortly after midnight on Sunday.
In an effort to protect herself and family, the woman has cut down all the trees around her house and installed a number of lights.
The police have since detained three young men for questioning in connection with the matter while efforts are being made to trace the origin of the calls.
