– President’s XII avoid blowout

After snatching victory from the jaws of defeat on Monday night, the Washington D.C Jammers, convinced that Guyana does not have the tenacity to beat them, completed a clean sweep of their opponents at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall Tuesday night.
The team unleashed a savage offensive onslaught in the first quarter that completely left Guyana bewildered. Jammers’ captain, Dexter Martin and Kelvin Bright led the early attack nailing easy jumpers and finishing put-backs that went without responses.
Guyana’s early scrappy defence gave Jammers an opportunity to coast to a 77-68 points win that could have been worse save for a late surge from the hosts. Martin and Keron McKenzie had 15 points each while Mouktar Fawehinmi scored 10 points.
Andrew Ifill was the leading scorer for the nation with 19 points as Gullen added 15 points and Akeem Kanhai 11 points. It was the third loss for the President’s XII in the three-game series following the Jammers’ wins last Thursday and Monday nights.
The Jammers capitalised on a deflated local side, which threw a game they should have won the night before when Captain Darcel Harris missed two free throws in the final second. Guyana had its chance and Jammers would not have allowed another.
Martin made some clinical offensive plays that included sublime fundamental jump shots and an inside game that went unmatched. His work in the first quarter helped D.C Jammers to what was an irreparable 23-10 points’ lead at the end of the first period.
With the injured terror guard, Joseph Flegler on the bench, the Jammers looked to McKenzie for a greater role, which they got in the second period when the shooting guard lit up the net with his three-point shooting from all parts of the parameter.
McKenzie and centre, Lancelot Loncke worked in cohorts with the same combination that Bright and Martin exploited in the first quarter. The pick-and-roll and isolation offensive plays were the same just that the characters in the role had changed with substitutes.
Obviously Loncke and McKenzie had a greater impact since at the end of the second period there was a harrowing distance in the scores. The Jammers led 44-24 mid way through the game as the Guyanese offensive attempts continued to spiral out the new rims.
The pounding was proliferated in the third quarter with Jammers maintaining their lead 62-39 at the end of the penultimate period. However, stifling full-court pressure defence in the last period from the Guyanese returned the game to some respectability.
Guyana went back to the teamwork and help-defence that proved on the two previous nights that they could beat the D.C Jammers. The home team backed by a boisterous fan base, outplayed D.C Jammers in 10 minutes of quality basketball from a decent team.
The President’s XI topped Jammers’ offence 29-15 in the final quarter to end with a single-digit loss. However, it was too little too late as the Jammers concentrated on using the clock and time to get them the sweep. The team departed Guyana yesterday morning.
