Dear Editor,
His Excellency, President Jagdeo, visited Buxton last week, met with a section of the community and invited a few esteemed villagers to a fancy dinner party, compliments of the Guyanese taxpayers.
Since then there have been an outpouring of emotions in and out of the media as to this seemingly sinister move by the Government and some of the higher mortals of Buxton.
After all, Buxton in a time not so distant pass was the eye sore and eye pass of the Government.
Buxtonians were viewed as a vicious barbaric set of natives belonging to the opposition who were bent on condoning the erosion of law and order on the East Coast and ultimately affecting the national security of the country.
Now that the gunmen have left, Buxton remaining morbidly underdeveloped and an election not too far away, the PPP/C election road show began with this most historical visit by His Excellency.
While in principle there are numerous arguments that can be had as to why the Buxtonian organisers would even have entertained such a ludicrous idea, people must remember that in every organisation in society there are persons who walk on the moral high ground and those who are prepared to sell their morality to the highest bidder. The 170th Committee is no exception! After all, the 170th Committee is made up of humans, with some most likely having the same DNA of Esau.
Those of you not familiar with that fellow Esau from the old testament in the Christian Bible, he was the brother of Jacob both being sons of Isaac and grandsons of Abraham.. Hunger or greed depending on how you look at it, resulted in Esau selling his birthright to Jacob for porridge.
This act along with a few other silly ones resulted in Esau falling way out of favour with God.
Today we see Buxton being offered up on a platter in exchange for the a few sips from the frothing cup of ale that is specially concocted to poison and tear apart the souls of the foolish that chose to drink.
This visit by His Excellency should not be viewed as any major threat. Its election time and this is a Public Relations initiative. The desired result is to drive confusion among the opposition forces most aligned to the Buxtonians. Generally I don’t believe that village of Buxton will vote for the PPP/C. The Buxtonian apologists might, but I seriously don’t believe the Buxton villager will go out there on Election Day and place his or her ‘X’ beside the cup. This is highly unlikely.
What needs to happen is that the people of Buxton need to stop others from using them as scape-goats. Buxtonians need to remember people like Shaka Blair who were gunned-down mercilessly. They need to remember that it was the same President who is now wining and dining the chosen few, was in charge of their security and allowed Donna Herod death to remain a mere causality of a crime war without any proper investigation and justice being served to her family.
The same way their elders were able to stop the governor’s train and demand he listen to their concerns, the same way contemporary Buxtonians must rise up and stop others from using them as pawns to be shuffled around for the narrow political gains of a few. Buxtonians have to ask themselves: Why after 18 years of ‘democratic rule’ their village still remains one of the most underdeveloped in Guyana?
