In response to an appeal to the international community by the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan for assistance to facilitate the provision of relief to the millions of people affected by the severe flooding in that country, the Government of Guyana has decided to donate US$30,000.
This information was made public yesterday by Director General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Elizabeth Harper.
When contacted yesterday, Mrs. Harper said that the Government at present would not be accepting any donations from the private sector to be added to its contributions.
This newspaper understands that the Central Islamic Organization of Guyana has commenced mobilization efforts to garner some aid to be sent to Pakistan
In a message to President Asif Ali Zardari which was sent on August 4, last, President Bharrat Jagdeo had conveyed the sympathies of the Government and people of Guyana to the Government and people of Pakistan.
While he took the opportunity to also salute the people of Pakistan for their courage and resiliency, he expressed hope that the responses of local authorities and the international community would help the country to rebound from the tragedy.
In the latest news emanating from Pakistan some 200,000 people have been evacuated in the Thatta area of Sindh province, where dozens of villages are submerged.
In the north, workers have begun clearing up as the floods recede.
The UN has appealed for more helicopters to reach 800,000 people who are cut off.
Doctors in many areas are struggling to cope with the spread of water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea and cholera.
Five million Pakistanis have no shelter, and urgently need tents or plastic sheeting to protect them from the sun.
The UN says more than 17 million people have been affected by the monsoon floods, and about 1.2 million homes have been destroyed.
