The Guyana Police Force (GPF) Athletic Championships heated up at the Police Sports Club Ground, yesterday as both Guyana and Headquarters maintained their respective leads over there opponents that seem to be unassailable ahead of Friday’s final day.
Headquarters are significantly ahead of their nearest rival, ‘A’ Division, on 283 points with ‘A’ Division on 136 points. ‘B’ Division is third in the points standing with 43 points with Country Division fourth on 41 points after 17 finals yesterday.
In the international competition, Guyana is way in front with 138 points as Trinidad and Tobago is second with 54 points. Barbados is currently third with 33 points.
The competition continues tomorrow with today slated as the rest day for the teams.

Johnson to skipper GT this weekend at Providence

West Indies ODI left-hander Leon Johnson will lead the Georgetown Pit Bulls against the Coast Jaguars on Sunday at the Guyana National Stadium in the supporting game of the double header which see Guyana taking on Trinidad and Tobago in their final practice game before heading off to South Africa for next month’s Champions League 20/20 tournament.
New Line Cavaliers face Universal DVD Club Berbice Titans on Saturday in the opening game of the two-day 20/20 feast before the National team faces T&T in the main attraction and tickets for both days are already on sale for $1,000.
The Guyana/T&T matches on both nights are scheduled to commence at 20:00hrs with Dave Martins singing ‘Not a blade of grass’ before the Guyanese come out on the field each night and children under 12 years old will be admitted free.
Johnson, a member of the Guyana stand-by squad for South Africa, will have Dion Ferrier as his Vice-Captain and the City side will include talented National under-19 left-handed all-rounder Andre Stoll and First class players Trevor Garraway and Shemroy Barrington.
Police wicketkeeper Rawle Browne finally gets a call up after consistent performances at the domestic level while West Indies under-19 opener Trevon Griffith is also in the City side. Former First Class medium pacer Roddy Lovell is the Coach and Bharrat Mangru is the Manager.
The first match on each day is scheduled to commence at 16:00hrs and gates will be opened from 15:00hrs.
