According to the Government Information Agency, Minister within the Ministry of Health, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran yesterday visited the C.C. Nicholson Hospital, Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, where he met with the staff to discuss their needs.
Emphasis was placed on improving services in the maternity ward, which has recorded 49 deliveries over a six-month period.
It was pointed out that the facility has the capacity to provide maternity services, however it was indicated that more public awareness is needed, since persons are unaware of the hospital’s existence and the services provided there.
It is expected that following increased public awareness, more people will be inclined to access the services provided at the hospital, thereby reducing the number of women approaching the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) for maternity services.
He added that the hospital will encourage more women to give birth in a health facility rather than at home. He emphasised that depending on the nature of the pregnancy the midwife can refer the patient to the GPHC for safety.
The hospital is staffed by a Cuban doctor, midwives, nurse assistants, a resident medex, pharmacy assistant, community health worker, community resource person, and clinic attendant.
During the discussion requests were made for more medication, a generator, a functional rest room/lunch room, bins, and blood pressure apparatus.

St Maarten national sues local lawyer
A female St Maarten national has taken legal action against a Guyanese attorney.
Gracelyn Scott of Lime Road, Saint Peter Street, St. Maarten, Netherlands Antilles, has filed a matter in the High Court suing attorney at law Joel Persid-Edmond of 11 Trinity Street, New Amsterdam, and No.6 Village West Coast Berbice for the sum of $9M, which she claims is money owed to her.
The woman, through her attorney Dridhnauth Perry Gossai is claiming that the money is owed to her and represents a loan of US$45,000 to the defendant to assist him in setting up his law practice in Guyana. The loan was reportedly granted in 2007.
In her affidavit, the woman is claiming that the defendant agreed that he would set up his law practice in Guyana and the loan will be repaid over a 45-month period at a rate of US$1000 or G$200,000 at the end of each month. This payment should have commenced from the 30th April 2007.
The affidavit continued that the defendant made no payment and whenever a request was made he would request that the plaintiff wait a bit longer as business was slow. This went on for several months and after a while the defendant became abusive. The plaintiff is also requesting interest on judgment and cost.
Mr. Edmond is being represented by a battery of lawyers from the law firm of Hughes, Fields and Stoby.
