Dear Editor,
I refer to a front-page story – US in $2.6B aid deal in SN’s issue of Thursday, August 19, 2010.
As a Guyanese I am particularly worried about the action of members of the international community. They appear to be oblivious to the serious concerns of Guyanese about the stewardship of the Government.
Many of these developed countries are lending money and engaging in all sorts of financial deals and arrangements with Government in spite of the expressed dissatisfaction of citizens and even the findings of reports done by their own consultants.
This kind of attitude by members of the international community seems to suggest that they are quite comfortable with the way the current government is running this country. Also, there seems to be no systems in place to monitor and evaluate the results of aid given by these countries. If there are mechanisms then the public certainly do not know about them.
It is certainly giving the wrong impression to right thinking Guyanese. In many cases, we and our children would be saddled with the burden of repaying loans awarded by international financial institutions to this country, which we never asked for or was consulted on.
There is no proper consultation with citizens by the government, but yet they are the ones, who must witness and absorb the consequences of the excessiveness and wastage of this government.
The thing is that, these arrangements clearly do not force the Government to be innovative nor depend on the cooperation of local citizens. Aid is retarding the development of developing countries. As a result, their governments can do whatsoever they very well please. Look at the many reported instances of corruption, mismanagement and wastage.
Yet we, in this poor and developing country continue to read about deals being signed by America and other developed countries. It is either these countries really do not care about the problems we have with good governance or they are serving their own interests.
Either one Guyanese are the ones who will continue to live in poverty-stricken conditions because the aid is not reaching the people who really need it.
