Youth, Women & Brazilian teams can be added – Klass
President of the Guyana Football Federation and Chairman of the Inter Guiana’s Club Championship Committee, Colin Klass has stated that he is very pleased with the progress of the competition since it kicked off three years ago in French Guiana.
Klass made these comments at a press conference which was held yesterday to launch the Guyana leg of the competition which starts today at the GCC Ground.
“The competition between these countries has worked wonders; check the records and you will see all the associations have been getting better and better over these past years because of the exposure from this tournament.”
Klass noted that the three Presidents (Guyana, French Guiana, Suriname) will be meeting later this year in Suriname to review the past three years and they will be aiming to broaden and increase their options.
The organising committee will be looking at the inclusion of an Under-13, 15 or 17 team as well as the inclusion of the Women’s arm. Talks are also in train to tap into the Brazilian reservoir by including clubs from that country.
Giving a brief background to the initiation of this tournament, Klass noted that it was very difficult for the respective countries to traverse the world to have friendly games due to the high costs of air travel and it was felt that if the countries could collaborate more, the product of football can be much more developed to a level where the countries can challenge those outside of this sphere.
“Competition over the past years has been great and we expect this year to be no different. We will be meeting later this year to decide on the way forward. Definitely we will retain the club championship but we intend to add a few other areas to it.”
“One of which we are looking at seriously is our junior development and also consideration for the Women development. Whether or not we will include both of them next year is still to be decided at our upcoming meeting. I must congratulate the president’s and their various executives of those associations for their commitment and efforts in bringing the competition to where it’s at.”
The expansion thought will also include clubs from Brazil Klass declared since it would build the profile of the tournament which will lead to the improvement of standards in Guyana, French Guiana and Suriname.
“All in all I think it’s a good project for us here, it has gone very well so far and we will continue to build and improve on that.”
French Guiana Football Federation Board Member Alain Mijdi also complimented the GFF for doing a fine job as hosts. Mijdi stated that the tournament is designed to aid in the development of the sport in the respective regions. He also applauded the step the organizing committee will take with regard to female football.
“We have to all work together to bring football at a high level and I would like to say to the GFF that they have the continued full support of French Guiana.”
Guyana Defence Force FC Vice President Lt. Com. Orin Porter also complimented the Federations for the direction they are taking with regards to involving Under 13, 15 or 17 groups and women.
