Looking forward to weekend matches
By Sean Devers
Thirty-five year old Lennox Cush is now expected home on Friday from the USA due to a delay in collecting his Visa but the experienced right-hander says he is looking forward to this weekend’s 20/20 matches between Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago at the Guyana National Stadium.
Cush was the leading wicket taker (11) in the Caribbean 20/20 Championships which Guyana won to qualify for next month’s Champions League tournament in South Africa and his ‘tight’ off-spin makes him is a vital member of the Guyana side.
While Cush has batted ‘down’ the order in the Caribbean 20/20 tournament he has two First-Class hundreds for Guyana and his magnificent 57-ball 101 last Saturday for his adopted country USA spearheaded an 8-wicket win against host Italy in the final of the ICC division 4 tournament.
With 58 in the semi-finals on the previous day, Cush is a genuine all-rounder who is the only bowler to register a hat trick (twice) in Regional 20/20 cricket and recent form with the bat gives Guyana the option of using him as an opener in South Africa if the openers fail to fire.
Cush, who played 38 First-Class matches for Guyana and made his USA debut four years ago, returned to the US from Italy on Monday and was scheduled to join his Guyana teammates today.
“This last two weeks have been very tiring. We played five matches in five days in Italy and I have been on the go since I got back here (USA) to ensure I collect my Visa and there have been some delays which mean I will not get home until Friday. I am really looking forward to playing against T&T this weekend and I miss the team. I am really anxious to go into action in South Africa and I just have this feeling that we will do well once everyone remains focused,” Cush told Kaieteur Sports from New York yesterday.
The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) allowed the Malteenoes player to show his loyalty to the USA in Italy and the Guyanese, who was in the Stanford Super Star squad which beat England for US$20 Million and the Guyana team which won the US$1 Million in the inaugural Stanford tournament in 2006, said he is always keen to represent Guyana and feels the experience of playing on the hard artificial pitches in Italy would have been good preparation for the bouncy tracks in South Africa.
Cush was keen to find out how Guyana’s preparations were going and said this weekend’s matches are very important practice games since all Guyanese are expecting victory after hearing many Trinis say their team is still better than Guyana despite Guyana’s superior 20/20 record.
Guyana face Royal Challengers Bangalore in their opening match in South Africa on September 12 and this morning an overseas based Guyanese will make a monetary presentation to the GCB at the Stadium. The GCB will also receive more financial assistance this week from a group of USA based Guyanese for the team’s preparation.

BCB & RHTY&SC congratulate Shemaine Campbell on WICB MVP accolade
The Executive Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB), Management and Members of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) have extended congratulation to Berbice and Rose Hall Town Metro Female cricketer Ms Shemaine Campbell on being named the Most Valuable Player of the 2010 WICB Female Tournament.
The BCB in a press release said it is proud of Ms Campbell’s performance and confident that this is just the first of many major awards that would decorate her career.
This is the second MVP title that has been won by a Berbician at the Caribbean level; Devindra Bishoo being the first in the Twenty20 format and together with Jonathan Foo’s man-of-the-match performance, confirms the current high standard of the game in the Ancient County, the release stated.
“The BCB commits itself totally to the development of the game among females and would shortly announce some new and exciting programmes directed towards female cricket.
Ms Campbell’s talent was evident for everyone to see from a very young age and the BCB is proud to be associated with guiding her throughout her career.”
The release also extended congrats to her club, the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club which together with the Albion Cricket Club continues to produce high quality players for the County.
“It is the hope of the BCB that young aspiring female cricketers would follow in the footsteps of Shemaine Campbell and use her as a positive role model. The Board commits itself to playing a major role in the career of Ms Campbell and all other female cricketers in the County. We encourage Ms Campbell to keep her feet firmly on the ground, to remember that at 17 years-old her career is just beginning – discipline, dedication and continued hard work are the only pathways to success.”
The RHTY&SC release stated that the management and membership of the Club, especially Campbell’s team-mates (Pepsi Under-19; Bakewell 2nd Division; Gizmos and Gadgets 1st Division and Metro Female) extends profound congratulations to national female captain, Shemaine Campbell on her recent achievement.
“Shemaine has made all her club mates very proud and her performances underlines the rich pool of talent that exists at the club as a result of an aggressive coaching program at all levels.
Three of the club’s senior cricketers would soon be in South Africa with the Guyana team, four females were in the national team (Campbell, Erva Giddings, Melanie Henry and Nikita Toney) while three were also in the national Under-17 team. Shemaine’s performance is not surprising to us at the RHTY&SC because we are all aware of her talent, commitment, discipline and determination to be the best female player that Guyana ever had. Her performance was as a result of hours upon hours of determined and committed work.”
Over the last year, the release states, Ms Campbell became the first Guyanese female cricketer to score a century at the Inter County level, for Guyana at the junior level and now her 100* makes her the first to score a century at the senior level.
“The 17 year-old Campbell is also perhaps the youngest player to have captained a senior national cricket team and we are confident that under her leadership in the future, Guyana would dominate female cricket in the Caribbean. The club would like to encourage her to remain committed to our proven formula for success and to be a role model for all her peers.”
The Club is also acknowledging the contribution of their sponsors to the development of Campbell’s career especially the management and staff of Metro Office and Computer Supplies.
“Metro over the past three years has been the official sponsor of our female team and has invested heavily into the development of all our female cricketers. Special mention must be made of Mr. Taajnauth Jadunauth and Ms. Avie Lindee of the company for their support.”
