Teenage golfer Avinda Kishore carted off the third annual Courts Guyana Inc. Medal Play golf tournament in tough playing conditions caused by overnight rain last Saturday at the Lusignan Golf Course.
Kishore, who recently won the Safeway Security tournament, continued to show top form this season in recording a net score of 73 from a gross 85 playing off a 12 handicap as the course played tricky due to its soggy state.
Imran Khan secured the second position with a net score of 74 from a gross 79 playing off a 5 handicap while Bolaram Deo squeezed past Mike Mangal for third spot from a countback after both golfers ended with net scores of 75.
Deo recorded a gross score of 90 from a handicap 15, while Mangal had a gross score of 83 from a handicap 8.
Khan’s gross score of 74 was the lowest for the day.
Newcomer Rawle Moore won the prize for Nearest to the pin at the number 8 hole.
In an emotional presentation ceremony, members of Lusignan Golf Club said farewell to its President and outgoing Country Manager Lester Alvis who leaves Guyana on Tuesday for a new appointment in St. Lucia.
Alvis thanked Courts for sponsoring the tournament for the third year and encouraged the local furniture giants to continue its support for the Lusignan Golf Club.
Newly appointed Courts Country Manager Clyde De Haas said that his company will continue its sponsorship of the tournament. “We are on board and will ensure that the Courts tournament will be on the Club’s annual calendar,” he added.
De Haas also expressed appreciation to Alvis for his contribution to golf in Guyana during his tour of duty here.
Also present at the presentation ceremony were Courts Marketing Director Molly Hassan and members of the Lusignan Golf Club.

– US-based Nelson, Mounir to conduct sessions
Local female basketball players will finally benefit from long-overdue clinics after the arrival of United States of America based semi-professional Point Guard, Shauntelle Nelson and Division I College player and now Coach, Carolyn Mounir.
According to the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), the coaching sessions will run through August 26 at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall with Nelson and Mounir hoping to take the junior national female basketball team to New Amsterdam.
In Nelson’s senior year at Medgar Evers College, she became an all-time leading scorer, ranked 24 nationally with 1350 points. She has received over five MVP awards and placed in the top 20 for steals in the circuit in the United States.
Nelson has moved on to play for two semi-professional basketball teams in two different States- Atlanta and New Jersey where in New Jersey, she assisted tremendously in the playoffs and led the team to the second and championship rounds.
On the other hand, Coach Mounir attended St. Francis College in Brooklyn, New York where she played four years of Division I basketball. During her senior campaign at St. Francis College she finished in the top 20 in the nation in scoring.
Mounir was also ranked in the top five in rebounding. After graduating from St. Francis, Mounir had a short playing stint in Israel after which she worked as an Assistant Coach alongside Coach Steve Fagan at Globe Institute of Technology in the United States.
The Globe Institute is a Division I Junior College located in Manhattan. She was the Recruiting Coordinator. Mounir recently coached alongside Sue Wicks of the WNBA in the Empire State Games and also coached the 2007 national female team in Puerto Rico.
