The Hikers Hockey Club has scheduled its annual junior summer camp from today, August 23 to 28 at the Saint Stanislaus College Forum.
The camp is open to all aspiring junior hockey players and will run from 9am to 4pm daily. England based players Marvin Dannett, Janella Munroe and Chantelle Fernandes will team up with local coaches to put the juniors through their paces, as the club works towards increasing the quality and quantity of local junior players.
The players will be classified in three different groups, beginners, intermediates and advanced, to make the sessions as efficient as possible, with each group being coached separately.
Candidates will be exposed to skills ranging from the very basic to the latest in advanced skills used at the highest level of the game. The last day of the camp will be put aside for a mini tournament to allow the candidates to test their skills against players of similar skill levels. Interested persons can report to the Saint Stanislaus College Forum from 9 this morning.

Taffin Khan performs creditably at Umada Cup/Caribbean Chess tourney
Former Junior Chess Champion, Taffin Khan recently returned from Trinidad and Tobago where he participated in the 1st Caribbean two tiered Chess tournament, the UMADA Cup and the Caribbean Cup where he registered five victories in the latter category, amassing two draws and two losses to finish on six points and an overall fourth place with seven other Caribbean players.
The tournament which got underway on Sunday August 15 and culminated one day later also hosted several high level chess affiliates including head of Republic of Kalmykia, FIDE President Kirsan Ilyumzhinov who played an integral role in the opening ceremony.
Several other high leveled dignitaries in the chess fraternity also attended the ceremony including the Continental President for Americas Mr. Jorge Vega and chairman of FIDE CACDEC Commission Allan Herbert. The president of the Caribbean Chess Federations, His Excellency Kirsan IL Yumzhinov in delivering brief remarks at the opening ceremony emphasized the importance of the championships to the young players.
He urged them to grasp the opportunity to procure valuable experience while ascribing to improve their ratings.
Mr. Kirsan Il Yumzhinov also held discussions with several Presidents and representatives of chess federations to discuss tactics to improve the sport in the Caribbean while focusing heavily on integrating chess into the schools curriculum.
Meanwhile, Venezuela, I M Rafael Prasca triumphed in the Open category of the UMADA Cup at the end of the 9 rounds tournament. He scored 8 points while his countryman, IM Julio Ostos registered 7 points. IM Gustavo Hernandez (Dominican Republic) and FM Keron Cabralis of Trinidad amassed 6 points apiece to jointly occupy the third place slot while five players were bundled together on 5 1/2. They included FM Ryan Harper (Trinidad), Martyn Del Castilho (Barbados), Marcus Joseph (Trinidad), David Finol (Venezuela) and Mario Sanchez (Costa Rica).
Surinamese, Romario Sanches played brilliantly to cart off the honours in the Challenger’s section. He ended on 8 after dropping one game.
Seeded 14th at 1972 ELO, Sanches defeated several of the higher-rated players to clinch the crown. Venezuelan German Herrera shared the second podium position with his compatriot, Ulises Hernandez after both players scored 7 1/2 points apiece. Jamaican, WFM Deborah Richards scored six points and was eventually adjudged the best female player.
The idea for such a tournament was conceptualized about two months ago when the FIDE President attended the closing ceremony of Capablanca Memorial tournament in Cuba. More than 100 chess players from 15 countries in the Caribbean, South America and Latin America participated in the Trinidad held tournament.
The Trinidad and Tobago Chess Association hosted the championships which was sponsored by FIDE and played at the Cascadian Hotel and Conference Centre in St. Ann’s, Port of Spain. The challenger section attracted seventy two players with an ELO rating under 2100.
