Following his sterling performance at the Hampton Games in Trinidad and Tobago supported by a personal best time of 10:47secs in the 100M dash, star sprinter of the Enmore Athletics Club, Kenneth Semple, has managed to clinch a lucrative sponsorship deal that supports his five months off season training programme.
Toolsie Persaud once again rose to the corporate challenge after Semple’s coach, John Martins requested support for his charge.
The management of that organization acquiesced to a sponsorship package to the tune of some $175,000 dollars. According to Mr. Martin, the funds would be used for a variety of issues pertaining to Semple’s development.
His training regimen includes a detoxification process to rid the body of all toxic wastes before he embarks on a strength and endurance programme that commences this month end and culminates in December. Further, the young athlete returns to Trinidad and Tobago for another training stint that culminates in August 2011.
Semple visited the Sussex Street offices of Toolsie Persaud where the Manager of the Hardware Department, Mohan Harnanan handed over the check to facilitate his training schedule. Also present at the function was Sales and Marketing Officer, Paul Ramdeo as well as Supervisor of Toolsie Persaud Ltd, Ayesha George.
Accompanying Semple was Mr. Martins and Treasurer of the Enmore Athletic Club Petal Lashley.
Mr. Harnanan once again reiterated his company’s commitment to the development of local athletes while promising to continue along this vein. He wished Mr. Semple all the best in his future endeavors.
Mr. Martins then expressed his gratitude to the management of Toolsie Persaud even as he promised to steer his charge in the right direction towards athletic excellence.
Ashwant Satamand prevails amidst competitive level of play
Ashwant Satamand chalked up an impeccable 4 games and a positive spread of 816 to win the first prize when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players (GASP) staged its inaugural junior scrabble tournament at the Malteenoes Cricket Club Thomas lands, yesterday morning. Ricaldo Purnwasi ended on 3 games and a positive spread of 445 to claim the second place while Jennelle Cadogan closed off the podium positions after amassing 3 games and a positive spread of 85.
Junior chess player, Rashad Hussein switched board games and managed to cart off the prize for the most bingos (5). He also registered the highest single play after playing the bingo ‘squeeze’ and earning 123 points. Added to that the players occupying positions 4th and 5th each received a gift voucher valued $3000 to shop at Giftland Office Max, the sponsors of this prize.
The organizers also stuck to their word and presented each player with a T shirt, compliments of Abdool and Abdool Insurance Brokers.
Indeed the competition was fierce from the onset with several of the players battling intensely for honours. At the end of the penultimate game Tevin Skeete and Satamand were comfortably ahead on three points apiece and slated to face off. Hussain and Purnwasi were on 2 points apiece but with higher spreads than the other players. Salamand solidified his position with a 99 point drubbing over Skeete to upset his hopes, finally occupying the fifth place position. In the end, the most unlikely player, Cadogan managed to slip in the podium lineup.
National scrabble champion, Abigail McDonald complimented the players on the high standard of play exhibited while pointing out the mercurialness of the sport. GASP President, Moen Gafoor urged the players to keep practicing so as to improve their level of competence.
“Most of the senior players were at your stage at one point of their career,” Mr. Gafoor told the players. He promised to organize another beginners’ tournament in the near future.
