– three others hospitalised
An early morning accident on the Mandela Avenue, in the vicinity of the National Cultural Center yesterday, left one person dead and three others nursing various injuries at two city hospitals.
Dead is Christopher Crawford, 19, of 111 Miles Mahadia, who according to hospital sources suffered tremendous head injuries.
He was a passenger in a Toyota Allex motorcar.
One of the injured was identified as Shawn Gonzalves, who was driving a Toyota CRV. He has been admitted as a patient at the St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
Jasper Benfield of 1908 Festival City South Ruimveldt, who was one of four passengers in the Toyota, received injuries to the neck and legs. He has since been admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The lone female in that vehicle was identified as Tiffany Russell of 2141 Hummingbird Street, South Ruimveldt.
Kaieteur News understands that the woman received lacerations to the face, hands and feet.
Reports reaching this newspaper stated that the Toyota had swerved out of its lane and into the path of the Honda CRV that Gonzalves was driving.
Eyewitnesses yesterday told this publication that the CRV was proceeding north when the Toyota slammed into it. The driver of the Toyota has not been located by the police. “The CRV was not wrong, he was in his lane…..is the other car that was speeding and slam into he,” said one eyewitness.
Police sources yesterday said that the driver who is popularly known vanished from the hospital after learning about Crawford’s death.
The eyewitness further stated that the Toyota was earlier seen drag racing on Sheriff Street.
This newspaper was told that Crawford who was seated next to the driver was pinned in the vehicle and it took members of the Guyana Fire Service several minutes to get his body out of the wrecked vehicle.
He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Hospital around 06:00hrs. Benfield, who spoke briefly while he was been wheeled into the x-ray room, said that they had just left the National Stadium when the accident happened.
Unlike the eyewitnesses, Benfield said that his vehicle was not speeding. The young man opined that it was probably the water on the road that caused the accident.
Meanwhile, relatives of Gonzalves said he was not to be blamed for the accident, since the other vehicle slammed into his.
Up to press time all the injured persons were still being treated at the various hospitals.
