Tickets go sale from Tuesday
By Sean Devers
Caribbean 20/20 champions Guyana will conclude their match practice for next month’s Champions League 20/20 cricket tournament in South Africa with back-to-back ‘grudge’ matches against dethroned Regional champions Trinidad and Tobago under lights at the Guyana National Stadium on August 28 & 29 and tickets go on sale from Tuesday.
The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) yesterday informed that in addition to what promises to be two riveting matches between the two countries from 20:00hrs each night, New Line Cavaliers and Universal DVD Club Berbice Titans will clash from 16:00hrs on August 28 in a re-match of the their July 4 final at the Stadium in the DJ Stress 20/20 Festival when Berbice emerged champions.
The next day, the Guyana/T&T battle will be preceded by another 16:00hrs contest, this time between East Coast Jaguars and the Georgetown Pit Bulls who lost to Berbice in the final of the Digicel National Summer Splash tourney at the Stadium.
Tickets for any of the four main stands cost $1,000 while children under 12 years-old will be admitted free. Tickets go on sale from Tuesday at all the locations of the M & M Snackette, Dave’s Sports Bar (Grove), PK’s Variety Store (Canal # 2), Aaron & Andrew General Store (Parika, Meter-Meer-Zorg and V-E-Hoop), Joseph Record Bar, Discount Palace (Lusignan) and Lalsa General Store in D’Edward Village, West Berbice.
Cell phone giants Digicel, who continues to play a massive role in the Guyana team’s preparations after playing a similar role when the Guyanese were getting ready for the Caribbean Championships, are again on board as sponsors while Carib Beer, Pepsi and Universal DVD Club of Berbice are also on board as sponsors for next weekend’s showpiece at Providence.
Former West Indies Under-19 opener Richard Ramdeen has been added to the 14 players who flew the Golden Arrow Head proudly during this country’s unbeaten run in the Caribbean Championships in Barbados and Trinidad and what is anticipated to be a sell-out crowd will have the chance of seeing all 15 Guyanese players who will head to South Africa, in action next weekend.
“All 15 of the Guyana players will be in action over the two days since in addition to these games being used to prove that Guyana are indeed the best team in the Region, we (GCB) are using these matches as practice for South Africa and we want everyone to get a knock,” a GCB official told Kaieteur Sport yesterday.
The GCB executive explained that when the Final X1 is selected on the morning of each match against T&T, the remaining 4 Guyana players will play with their team (Berbice or GT) or if their team is not playing on that day, with one of the other two teams involved.
The Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) is having discussions with regards to providing Radio and TV coverage of the games while several overseas based Guyanese who did not get the opportunity to see Guyana’s pulsating 4-run win against T&T in the semi-finals of the Caribbean Championships in Trinidad, are already making plans to return home for the games.
Guyana’s win against T&T in the semis has not gone down well with many
die-hard T&T fans who took it for granted that their team, (which set the standards really high in last year’s Champions League in India by playing unbeaten until their loss to New South Wales in the final) would again be representing the West Indies in this year’s competition and T&T will be keen to back up their boast of being the Region’s best 20/20 unit with victories against the Guyanese.
In the three regional 20/20 competitions held, Guyana has won twice, both times beating T&T on the way to championship honors while T&T’s only win was in 20008 in Antigua when they did not face Guyana, who lost by a run to Jamaica in the semi-finals.
It has been confirmed that the big-hitting Kieron Pollard, who was struck on his face playing for his English County side and who will represent Mumbai Indians in the 2010 Champions League, will be on show at Providence next weekend.
Fans are being encouraged to purchase tickets early and to wear the national colors (green & gold).
The expected bumper crowd will be keen to see the Caribbean’s latest sensation, 19-year-old Jonathon Foo, play his first senior game for his country on home soil.
Persons desirous of renting private booths can contact the GCB Office at Bourda immediately for further information.

Fire Service take revenge on Police
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) B Division Cricket team took revenge on their Police counterparts when they whipped the Felix Austin Police B Division Training School (FAPTC) cricket team by 58 runs in their feature 15/15 match played recently at the Police training school venue at Adventure Corentyne.
The triumph was fitting revenge for their loss to the Police Youth Club Team in earlier matches.
Fire Service won the toss and took first strike. They reached a formidable 110-8 off their 15 overs with Kevon Edwards blasting 41(5×6). Edwards received support from Raul Edwards 24 (2×6, 2×4) and Michael Saul 19 (2×6, 1×4).
Bowling for Police Training School, Shaun Motilall took 3 wickets while there were 2 apiece for Brian Sealey and Junior Bennet.
The hapless Police Training School lads were doused by the Firemen who sent them packing for a paltry 52 in 10.4 overs. Sealey with 39 (2×6, 3×4) was the only batter to withstand the firemen’s heat.
Bowling for the winners the Edwards boys were again on top of the ladder exerting steam for Fire Service, with man-of-the-match Kevon leading the way with figures of 3-6 from 3 overs while Ruel, Quesi Mentore and Eon Archibald snared 2 wickets each.
At the presentation ceremony, the winning Fire Service team collected the Younus Construction Trophy.
Player of the game Kevon Edwards swept all the individual trophies as he won the man-of-the-match Anirude Construction Trophy along with the best bowler and best batsman awards which were presented by Station Sergeant Randolph Chase of the Blairmont Police Station. The games are part of an ongoing initiative by the Police Force in B division to engage in various activities among the Military, Paramilitary Services and Community Groups.
