Lyons sets record in 50 fly semis
Christian Homer set history at 07:03hrs yesterday (TT time) when he became the first Trinidad and Tobago athlete to win gold at the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore.
Swimming out of lane four in the 50m backstroke final, Homer touched the wall in 26.36 seconds, ahead of Kal Wee Ng Rainer of Singapore (26.45). There was a tie for third place with Kuwait’s Abdulah Altuwaini and Australia’s Max Ackermann who both stopped the clock at 26.46.
The record breaking athlete expressed joy and pride at his achievement. “It was really a proud moment for me. I feel honoured at being winner of the first YOG gold for my country. Looking up at the clock and seeing the number one next to my name was truly the most memorable moment in my career thus far.”
Homer was extremely moved at the support he received from the T & T and the entire Caribbean contingent at the Games. “The mood was electric. Everyone was behind me and encouraged and motivated me before the race, and celebrated with me after. I was really happy at the strong Caribbean support I received”.
The national record holder described his feelings before the race as “super- excited”.
“I just wanted to go out hard and do the best I could for my country. My grandmother always told me to ask the Holy Spirit to guide me before every race and I did ask for God’s grace. I am ecstatic at the result and proud of my country’s achievement”.
Cadell Lyons added to T & T’s swimming success at the Youth Olympic Games setting a new national record in the 50m butterfly semifinals. Lyons achieved a new 15-17 national mark of 24.90, erasing his old mark of 24.98.
Lyons emerged the third fastest swimmer in the event in the semis, and aims to mount the podium after the final scheduled for today at 06:53hrs TT Time. This is the second record Lyons has set, the first being in the 100m butterfly.
Also competing was Kimberlee John Williams in the 200m freestyle. John Williams placed 36th in the event in a time of 2:11.92. Kadeja Phillip was scheduled to compete in the 100m butterfly event last night and the 4 x 100m medley relay team would compete in T & T’s final YOG swimming event today.
Norman Madhoo wins title in Better Hope Darts tourney
Former national champion Norman Madhoo played unbeaten to emerge victorious with the Open Singles title, in the best of 5 finals, then teamed up with Mark Persaud to secure the Draw Doubles title when the Guyana Darts Association, partnered by Granny’s Hangout Bar of Better Hope staged a one day tournament last Sunday at the same venue.
Madhoo disposed of reigning national singles champion Sudesh Fitzgerald by a 3-1 margin in the finals, while he earlier got the better of Nicholas Seetaram 2-1, in the semifinals.
Fitzgerald prevailed by a similar margin over Vibert Yearwood, who eventually copped the third place.
In the Draw Double Fitzgerald and Anil Persaud emerged as the runner-up, with Seetaram and Bryan James occupying the third spot.
The Highest Check Out was achieved by Anil Latchman with 120 points.
Cash incentives and trophies were presented to the various winners at the conclusion of the tournament.
Bella Dam Remix softball cricket team on USA tour
The Bella Dam Remix, one of Guyana’s leading softball cricket teams, has now transferred their competition campaign to the USA where most of their players have assembled for a tour.
The tour is also part of efforts to form the New York edition of the team. Veteran allrounder Devo Sadhu is the point man for the team who is still the manager and will also skipper the team with Beesham Nandalall being his deputy.
Plans are already in place for them to begin their USA sojourn when they take on a powerful Major League softball cricket team of New York next month. The match which is billed to be played under lights will have several prizes of trophies and cash incentives at stake.
Bella Dam Remix are currently in preparation for this encounter will be anxious to start off with a win so as to create a big impression on their first outing in the US.
