Gas station owner Gangadin Shivdat, 38, of Windsor Forest West Coast Demerara was yesterday placed on $150,000 bail after being slapped with three counts of obtaining fuel by false means. The man appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on August 5, at Providence, with the intent to defraud, Shivdat obtained 10,830 liters of gasoline and 31,000 liters of gas oil valued $7.4M – property of the Guyoil gas station – with the knowledge that he did not have sufficient funds in his bank account.
Another charge stated on August 4, with the intent to defraud, he obtained a quantity of gasoline from Guyoil worth $3.4M, knowing that he did not have any money in his bank account.
The last charge stated that Shivdat again on August 4, with the intent to defraud obtained a quantity of gasoline valued $2.5M.
He was not required to plead any of the three charges which the magistrate read. His lawyer, Hukumchand, in a bail application, told the court that his client was a very prominent businessman.
The lawyer added that his client and the complainant have already come to a compromise, and monies have been paid.
Police Prosecutor Stephen Telford made no objections to the granting of bail. However the prosecutor said that he was not aware of any settlement. Bail was set at $150,000. Shivdat is expected to make his next court appearance on September 22.
