… More legal troubles for MRL
Two farmers, both women, are among the latest to sue the Mahaicony Rice Limited (MRL) over outstanding payments.
Loretta and Sarjudei Balkarran, both of Burma Road, Mahaicony are asking the Commercial Court for payments, amounting to almost $4.8M, for paddy delivered to the company.
This would make it four rice farmers to take MRL to court within recent weeks.
Earlier this month, Essequibo rice farmer, Arnold Sankar, and overseas-based Mohamed Shariff both secured injunctions for more than $200M in outstanding monies.
Sankar had also managed, through his lawyers, in securing court orders to stop a ship filled with over 5,000 tonnes of rice from leaving or have MRL lodge a cash amount to the tune of $120M in the court. This was done last Friday, Sankar’s lawyer, Anil Nandlall, disclosed yesterday, paving the way for the ship to leave.
However, Shariff is still to be paid a $10M promised, out of $98M owed.
In additional to Nandlall, the farmers are being represented by attorneys-at-law Manoj Narayan and Euclin Gomes.
According to court documents filed for the Balkarrans, between, April 1 and April 17, they delivered a total of 1,392 bags of paddy to MRL but only received $446,200.
Despite demands, the miller did not pay.
Over the past weeks, there has been mounting pressure on MRL after several complaints from rice farmers to government regulators about non-payments.
Several rice farmers had staged picketing exercises at a Black Bush Polder facility, Region Six, and also at Mahaicony.
Officials of the Guyana Rice Development Board, regulators of the rice industry, have said that they were facing problems getting MRL to pay farmers for more than $300M in paddy taken during the last crop.
Recently, another amendment was made to the law that will force millers to lodge 10% cash value of their last crop value before milling licences are issued.
