– upsets dominate New Spot Seven
Major upsets were recorded in the National Supligen Domino Competition that got underway Monday night at The New Spot Seven, Freeman Street, East La Penitence.
Zone One favourites, Specialist, were booted out without having to play the final sitting against new comers, Go Getters and Lightning Reflection Bar while Mean Machine and R&R ‘B’ got rid of the Ministry of Health and Turning Point.
The competition got even more interesting when Beacons got the upper hand over Rage. Each of the Zones comprise nine teams playing on a two in, one out basis until the final where there will be one team heading to the national playoffs.
The final is scheduled for September 10 and 11 at the National Gymnasium.
Competition in Zone Two started last evening at F&H/Strikers Sports Club in Meadow Brook Gardens featuring Golden Stars, Impressors, Meadow Brook Warriors, F.I.B, Brazil, Mambo Bar, Blue Bird ‘A’, Titans and F&H Supremes.
Zone Three starts today at Transport Sports Club, Thomas Lands, with the likes of Rangers, Arsenal, Guyana Fire Service, Mix Up, Blue Birds ‘B’, Next Level, Trouble Shooters, Exodus and R&R ‘A’ taking to the tables for supremacy.
Zone Four will commence next week at Turning Point Sports Club, Tucville featuring Strikers, Turning Point ‘A’ among others.
The winner of the competition will get $200,000, one case of Supligen and the first place trophy while second place takes home $125,000, one case of Supligen and trophy. Third place will get $100,000, one case of Supligen and trophy.
The MVP will pocket $10,000 and six tins of Supligen. Zone winners will be given $10,000 and six tins of Supligen. Registration is still open and all interested teams are asked to contact Robert Williams or Wendell McPherson of Guyana National Domino Federation.

Courts Inc. to sponsor Medal play Golf tourney
Local Furniture giants Courts Guyana Inc. will sponsor this weekend’s Medal Play golf tournament at the Lusignan Golf Course.
Club Captain Patrick Prashad said a large field is expected to participate in the annual tournament which is a major event on the local golf calendar. He said the players are eager to compete following recent inclement weather which left the course in an unplayable state.
According to Prashad the tournament will tee off at 12:00 hours because of the large turnout expected.
Prizes will be presented to the top four finishers, Low Net, Nearest to the Flag at hole 8 and the Lowest Gross. Players have until Friday afternoon at 16:00 hours to register.
Last year’s winner Joaan Deo is expected to defend her title.
Also listed to compete are Courts Country Manager Lester Alvis, William Walker, Boloram Deo, Mike Guyadin, Ian Gouveia, Robert Hanoman, Colin Ming, Mel Sankies, Brian Hackett, Christine Sukhram, Esau Shamshudin, Carlos Adams, Imran Khan, Mike Mangal, Clifford Reis, Gavin Todd, the Cummings brothers Roy, Bruce and Andre, Albert Semple, Mark Lashley, Muntaz Haniff, Mohanlall Dinanauth and Dr. Ram Singh.
Management staff of Courts is expected to be on hand to assist in the presentation of prizes following the tournament.
Meanwhile, The RBTT sponsored Suriname Open Golf championships will now take place during the first weekend in October. The tournament was originally planned for this weekend in Paramaribo but organizers were forced to reschedule due to recent rain in the neighbouring republic.
The Lusignan Golf Club is expected to send a strong team to the tournament which will be held one month before the annual Guyana Open in November.
