A total of 72 youths drawn from the Lower Corentyne area are now better equipped to enter Secondary School for the first time after successfully graduating from the 5th Republic Bank sponsored Summer Camp organised by the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC) and facilitated by their Pepsi Under-19 and Gizmos & Gadgets Senior teams.
The aim of the Camp which took place at the Area ‘H’ Ground was to ensure that the Grade 6 students are fully prepared for a successful transition from Primary to Secondary School while teaching them the importance of sports in their personal development.
Club Secretary/CEO Hilbert Foster at the closing ceremony urged the students to always remember that education is the key to success and to strive to educate themselves as much as possible.
Foster told his attentive audience that technology is taking over the world and as such only the educated minds would be able to obtain and secure jobs. He also advised the graduates that they cannot be successful if they are indiscipline and encouraged them to respect their parents, teachers and elders.
The students were also told to get involved in sports as it assists youths to remain focused, dedicated and discipline.
Gratitude was extended to Republic Bank for its continued sponsorship of the camp. Foster said that investing in the education of youths was the best investment the private sector can make as the future of Guyana depends on how educated the youths are.
The 2009 Male Sports Personality of the Year also urged the students to support Republic Bank. Teacher of the Summer Camp, Mr. Rohan Etwaru, hailed the graduating class of 2010 as the best ever and noted that the level of commitment and discipline was of a high quality.
He disclosed that the students were taught Mathematics, English A, English B, Integrated Science, Social Studies and basic Spanish.
Special lectures were delivered on other topics including the importance of education, personal hygiene, the dangers of drugs, HIV/AIDS, peer pressure and public manners.
The students were also exposed to basic coaching on how to play cricket, basketball and volleyball in an effort to get them involved in sports while in secondary school.
Etwaru challenged his students to successfully merge sports and education and to do so while being discipline. Best graduating student Ms. Victoria Harry on behalf of the class expressed gratitude to the club and Republic Bank for investing in their future and pledged on behalf of her peers that each one of them would strive to be the best they can be.

Washington D.C. Jammers to arrive today
The Washington D.C Jammers are scheduled to arrive today for the much-anticipated showdown with the Guyana National Men’s team at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, which is expected to get underway tomorrow night for the Godwin McPherson trophy.
The President’s XI that will play the Jammers will also be released today at a formal session that will be held to update the media on the necessary facets of the tournament. Guyana will be vying for the coveted lien trophy after Jammers outclassed them in 2007.
Guyana’s team has gone through a careful process of scrutiny as the country looks to put its best senior males on the court against a formidable D.C Jammers side with over 80 percent of its unit exposed to College basketball at various levels in the United States.
Victory for Guyana in the upcoming contest will certainly mean that the host country is moving a step forward toward its Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) dream next year. The road to CBC, however, starts Thursday night with Guyana and the D.C Jammers.
