The eagerly awaited Inter Market football competition gets underway this evening at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH) with four exciting matches plus two exhibition games.
Organizer of the tournament, O’Neil Durant intimated that all systems are in place for an exciting tournament even as he promises keen and exciting contests from the very onset.
The tournament had taken a three year hiatus. And upon resumption, the organizers are confident that the tournament would produce the usual excitement witnessed over the years.
According to O’Neil Durant, one of the organizers, the tournament is among the best staged locally and pits the skills of footballers with affiliation to the various municipal markets. Beverage giant, Banks DIH has once again demonstrated staunch faith in the organizers’ ability to put on a qualitative show and has once again acquiesced to another lucrative sponsorship package.
The winning team carts off $200,000 and a trophy donated by the beverage giants while the runners-up would pocket $150,000. The third and fourth place finishers would be awarded $100,000 and $50,000, respectively. There would also be special prizes for the Most Valuable Player, best goalkeeper and the most prolific goal scorer.
Activities would commence with an exhibition match between Richard Ishmael and Tutorial High Schools.
Thereafter, a team of media representatives would oppose one from Banks DIH Ltd. Other matches on for the opening night are Bourda Market versus Parika Market, Kitty versus Buxton, East Ruimveldt versus Mahdia and Stabroek Market versus Houston.
The other playing days are Wednesday 25, Saturday 28 and Tuesday 31.
All team captains are advised that a strict disciplinary code would be enforced as the organizers attempts to restore some quality to the sport.
Matches kick off at 18:00hrs and the respective teams are asked to be at the venue at least half an hour before play commences.
Monedderlust flay Hopetown United 3-0; Fruta Conquerors hammer Netrockers 4-1
West Berbice based Monedderlust and City side Fruta Conquerors both registered wins and are through to the next round of the 3rd Annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial knockout football tournament organised by the Berbice Football Association.
Playing at the #5 Ground on Sunday last, Monedderlust behind a hat-trick from Gladwin Johnson banged their way to a comfortable 3-0 win over Hopetown United in feature play.
The opening game ended 4-1 in favour of city side Fruta Conquerors over Upper Demerara’s Netrockers.
Johnson hit the network in the 17th, 46th and 48th minute for the former two-time League champions in the Ancient County who are on a comeback trail.
Jomo Hinds converted a brace to lead Conquerors to their place in the next round. Netrockers drew first blood when Keon Bristol breached the Conquerors defence in just the 3rd minute; the game being reduced to a 70 minute match-up owing to the late arrival of the Linden team.
Being late did not in no way affect their performance in the opening minutes but as the game matured, the city side imposed their will on their challengers.
Hinds scored the first of his brace in the 18th minute slipping the ball past goalkeeper Deon Tyrell on the right side.
Netrockers were reduced to 10 men in the 21st minute when Deshawn Joseph was expelled after being booked for the 2nd time, the first half ended 1-1.
The final 35 minutes was all the Conquerors show as they controlled play at will. Eon Alleyne, just back from London where he played for the Guyana Football Federation All Star team which drew 1-1 with Cray Wanderers of London, handed Conquerors the lead in the 48th minute.
Hinds, was again on target in the 52nd while veteran Gerald Gritten sealed the deal for Conquerors in the 64th minute.
The tournament will continue this weekend with a number of matches bringing together clubs from the host County, Linden, Georgetown and the East Coast of Demerara.
Guyana impress at home for overall honours as injured Gibson cops Kumite Gold
Guyana capitalised on their raucous home support to emerge as the top team overall when the 11th International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF) Pan American championship concluded on Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sport Hall (CASH) after President Bharat Jagdeo presented gifts to leading ISKF officials.
Like on the opening day of action on Saturday, the hosts were urged on by another large crowd and although the Adults Men’s team failed to beat Canada in their Bronze medal match in the Kumite division, which was won by Barbados who got the better of USA, Guyana’s Nathalie Gibson whipped Canadian Crystal Schatz in the individual Kumite final to give Guyana the gold medal.
The 31-year-old Gibson is Guyana’s only female Adult Black belt, but the 3rd Dan was unable to participate in the Kata due to a knee injury which maybe denied Guyana the chance of securing another medal. Guyana’s Maureen Woon-a-Tai also took the Gold Medal in the Individual Kata.
Hosted by Guyana for the first time since 1989, the Championship was graced by the presence of top ISKF officials Master Teruyuki Okazaki and Yutaka Yaguchi who also held a training symposium, seminars and examinations that were sanctioned by the ISKF, at the Princess Hotel.
Gibson added another gold medal effort to her 2008 Shoto Cup gold and executed her technique wonderfully to score the first point in the final against Schultz to the delight of the patrician crowd.
The Canadian retaliated to equal the scores before Gibson, who failed to achieve victory last year in St Lucia due to her injury in the deciding stage of the tournament, scored the winning point just before the bell. It was also a good day for the local junior karatekas. Eight-year-old Aliya Wong won the individual Kata and Kumite 8-9 age group categories before going on to assist her countrymen to the team title.
Mark Wong continued Guyana’s winning ways with victory in the Individual Kata and Kumite competitions in the 8-9 age group category while his compatriots Tariq Dundas and Nathan Hackett were second and third respectively.
Guyana also dominated the Junior Team and Individual Kata competitions. Leah Shariff won the girls’ 10-11 Individual Kata while she secured Bronze in the Kumite competition with Guyanese Tashana Wong taking silver.
Mikhail Broomes and Alexander Cheeks, who went on to take the top podium position in the Individual Kumite, got Silver and Bronze respectively in the boys’ 10-11 Individuals.
It was not all smooth sailing for the locals who had to settle for the Sliver after Joshua Broomes was disqualified in the final.
Sophie McKoy took gold while Christine Dey and Amber Lowe got the silver and bronze medals respectively as the local girls put on a good show. Dey received gold in the individual Kata. In the boys’ 12-13 team kata Guyana took silver and bronze with Barbados taking gold.
Guyana won the team Kata in the boys’ 14-15 age group while Shane Rahaman, who competed in Guyana’s A-team that won the gold medal, copped the Individual Kata and Kumite competitions. On the distaff side Junior Caribbean Champion and Pan American Silver medalist Kristina Cheeks took Silver in the Individual Kata competition behind Canada’s Alexa Villanueva.
