GDF bang Sunburst Camptown 4-1 for 3rd
Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United continued their dominance of club football in Guyana when they added the Guyana Football Federation Super 8 championship trophy to their already bulging collection. Aka the Manchester United of Guyana, the leading club side also pocketed $500,000 for their 2-1 win over Victoria Kings in the final played on Sunday evening at the GFC Ground, Bourda.
The Guyana Defence Force ended 3rd overall hammering Sunburst Campton 4-1 in the third and fourth place playoff; Telson McKinnon and Peter Parks both recording a double each for the Army.
Kings, once regarded as a powerhouse in this format of the game is gradually regaining their form and were not going to lay back and allow Alpha to dictate the pace of the game.
Just a few minutes into the match, the Kings made their intentions clear and could have taken the lead if the ball from a fierce shot did not hit the cross bar with the keeper already beaten.
But Alpha United – reduced to ten in the 16th minute following the expulsion of Leon Grumble for violent conduct – who are the defending Super League Champions and also in pole position after the first round, gradually worked their way into a dominating mode.
Dwain Jacobs, one of the exciting midfield/forwards in the Alpha line-up and always a hard worker, snatched the lead for his side in the 19th minute with a well executed shot inside the area.
But despite taking the lead, it was not all smooth sailing for the top local club who will be representing Guyana along with the Guyana Defence Force in the Inter Guiana’s Cup Championship set for this month end here.
Victoria Kings made some enterprising runs of their own but some solid
defensive work from ‘The Hammer’ led by their Captain Howard Lowe, Quincy Madramootoo and Kelvin McKenzie smothered the many opportunities the East Coast side created despite playing a man short.
Alpha were not able to sit comfortable for almost the entire encounter; even when their leading marksman Anthony ‘Awo’ Abrams extended the lead with 7 minutes to go in regulation time, they were not yet out of the woods as the Kings kept up their attacks.
The lead was reduced in the 89th minute when Aubrey Gibson breached the Alpha defence nudging the ball into goal from a cross on the left side.
The goal lifted the spirits of the Kings but ‘The Hammer’ were already celebrating as time would have been on their side. A few moments later Referee Stanley Lancaster sounded the final whistle, effectively declaring Alpha the champions by a 2-1 margin over the Kings.
Alpha had defeated Sunburst Camptown coming from behind in their semifinal clash following their opening win over Bakewell Topp XX while Victoria Kings took care of Rosignol United and the GDF in their first and second games respectively.
The Army were in rampant form against Camptown in the third place match-up triumphing 4-1. Peter Parks scored in the 7th and 57th minute while Telson McKinnon a former Camptown player was on target in the 18th and 35th minutes. Nigel ‘Powers’ Codrington pulled one back for Camptown in the 44th minute.
The champions’ cheque, winner’s trophy and gold medals were presented to Alpha Captain Howard Lowe by Franklin Wilson, 2nd Vice President of the Guyana Football Federation shortly after the final.
Trophies and medals (silver & bronze) were also presented to Victoria Kings and the GDF for placing 2nd and 3rd respectively by GFF Super League Administrator Kirk Douglas and Tournament Coordinator Lawrence Griffith.
