Ifill – A major boost to national senior team
– Player arrives for International Series
Trinidad and Tobago-based semi-professional and professional Guyanese basketball player, Andrew ‘Mr. Dunk’ Ifill arrived yesterday morning to boost the national senior team’s chances against the formidable, Washington D.C Jammers.
Ifill was expected to join the national team for their practice session yesterday evening on the Burnham Basketball Court ahead of Thursday night’s commencement of the International Basketball Series at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Andrew ‘Mr. Dunk’ Ifill arrives at the Windjammer International Hotel yesterday from the Cheddi Jagan International Airport to prepare for battle in the International Basketball Series.
The two teams, Guyana and the Washington D.C Jammers will play for the Godwin McPherson Lien Trophy, which the host hope they can win in the inaugural competition. The D.C Jammers, however, is expected to field a very strong team for the contest.
The Washington-based team is expected in Guyana on Wednesday morning. The International Series will also feature a women’s competition with the national female side coming up against the South Carolina Lady All-Stars, who crushed them last year.
Speaking with Kaieteur Sport shortly after his arrival at the Windjammer International Hotel, a much fitter and lean Ifill said that Guyana must compete against D.C Jammers first before they start thinking about winning the competition.
He believes that Guyana’s strength will be good team defence. “I mean everyone has to play a lot of defence. Not because a guy is a six-footer you will back off and give him space at the top of the key, we have to play defence all the time,” Ifill said.
From the look of the Washington D.C Jammers, the team is intent on dominating the boards with only one player under the six-foot mark. The team is going ‘big’ against Guyana and Ifill believe that some of the unexposed locals must not be intimidated.
“See when you are exposed you will know that that is normal. So some of the guys that will be in the side for the first time must know that they are there to play basketball and its a team sport,” Ifill told this newspaper, adding that he is here to win the title.
Apart from Ifill, Dwayne ‘Brown Sugar’ Roberts is expected to be available to the team as host, Guyana look to put their best team on the floor. Guyana will officially release its team sometime around Tuesday for the biggest basketball event this year.
