– some to attend President’s College
Hinterland children can expect a better quality of education as the new school year approaches, Minister of Education Shaik Baksh promised at a graduation for a group of volunteer teachers yesterday.
Minister Baksh said that a number of hinterland children who have performed well at the National Grade Six Assessment exams have been accepted at the President’s College.
Minister Baksh said that hinterland students must have access to quality education which cannot be provided in their region.
It was stated that the President’s College has one of the largest dormitory facilities in the country, and broadening the institution with the intake is the Education Ministry’s decision.
According to the Education Minister, the cost per student is about $350,000 per year and a larger number of students can benefit from a quality of education that the Ministry intends to maintain at the institution.
However, a source confirmed that children with as little as 408 marks were admitted to PC and the hinterland list showed that about 50 children, some of whom had below 400 marks, were accepted into the institution.
Kaieteur News had recently reported that the board of the PC made the decision to cut costs at the institution, as the money from Central Government was not enough to maintain the school and the staff.
In spite of the recent criticism that was directed at the school, Minister Baksh said that PC is doing well and is among the top Sixth Form schools in Guyana.
This newspaper had reported that about 30 persons on the auxiliary staff of President’s College were slated to be transferred from the institution to the Ministry of Education in Georgetown, while others are expected to be asked to retire, due to their age.
But Baksh said on Friday that resources have not been taken away from the school and that there is a full compliment of staff as well.
He highlighted that the Ministry has also appointed a new Head Teacher for the institution.
Kaieteur News was told that more than 210 students had been accepted into the First Form batch at President’s College for the new school year, beginning September, despite a scaling down of employees at the institution.
