A record 70 horses are expected to compete when the annual Kennard Memorial Grand Post Emancipation horserace meet is staged today at that entity’s track, Bush Lot Farm Corentyne Berbice.
Eight races are slated for the day’s programme with over $3.5M in trophies and cash incentives up for grabs. The ‘C Class’ event pits the skills and endurance of some of the nation’s top animals and has a tantalizing $500,000 first prize is the reward. This event is sponsored by beverage giants DDL and the animals will compete over a one mile distance. Horses competing in this race include Sweet Revenge, Annie’s Playmate, Irish Gel, Laurel Lee in Flight, Face D Music, Prince Charming, Maracas Man, Tropical Passion and On the Rock with Sault and Star Tracer.
The 3 years old event for horses born and bred in Guyana and the West Indies will see the horses galloping over a one mile distance and includes Stormy Water, Stormy Deal and Five Star General among other top horses.
The F and Lower event over 6 furlongs has an encouraging first prize of $200,000 and competing horses are The Gap, Face the Music, Top Fortune, Prixie Fire, Do by Dutchin, Mattarazzi, Pinch D Cash and Finishing Touch among others.
There will also be two events involving the two year old horses. In the first for West Indies bred animals over 5 furlongs, several top animals would be on show and include Sabrina’s Joy, Princess Yasmin, Irish Girl and Money Up front among others. This race carries a top prize of $250,000.
In the second 2-yrs old event for locally bred horses over a similar 5 furlongs distance, several top horses would face the starting line. They include Royal Salute, Wicked Intention, Water Wave, Kevin and Apostle among others. These horses are competing for the $180,000 purse.
The ‘I class 7 furlongs event will see the winner receiving $140,000 with Custom Warrior, Power Master, Baby Boy, Clear Victory and Brown Boy all a part of this event.
The J&K 6 furlong event will see several top horses competing for a winning purse of $100,000 over 6 furlongs. Some of the top horses vying for honours in this event are Native Prince, Natural Black, Great Prospect, Diplomat and Try Again among others.
The I3 event in the J Class and Lower has the likes of Sun Razor, Indian Boy, Blessed Child, Bounty Flyer and Channel Boy all in the hunt for the winning prize.
Top individual performers will be presented with lucrative accolades compliments of Ramesh Sunich f Trophy Stall, Bourda market.

Third annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial KO Football Tournament resumes today
The inclement weather that has disrupted football activities in Berbice has abated somewhat and the administrators of the Berbice Football Association (BFA) are on the verge of resuming activities with the first two matches today.
In the first match scheduled for 14:00hrs, NetRockers F.C of Linden will clash with Conquerors F.C of Georgetown while the feature attraction between home team Monedderlust F.C and Hopetown United gets underway at 16:00hrs.
Both sets of fixtures promise to produce exciting exchanges as the footballers battle for a place in the next round.
These matches follow the earlier launching of the Annual Cheddi & Janet Jagan Memorial Football Tournament 2010, by His Excellency President Bharrat Jagdeo at the Babu John Commemorative Site during the celebration of the life of the two former Presidents and stalwarts of Guyana.
Other top officials at the ceremony included Regional Chairman, Mr. Zulficar Mustapha, members of the PPP’s Commemorative Committee and other members of the Region #6 Administration,
Another double header that was earlier scheduled for Burnham Park was postponed because of unfavourable ground conditions due to recent rains.
However, the tournament continues next week with some very exciting match ups.

Guyana Cup Mega Horserace meet gallops on Sunday August 29
$10M up for grabs in nine race event
The Rising Sun Turf Club will be teeming with action when the Jumbo Jet Auto Sales and Racing Stables, in collaboration with the Rising Sun Turf Club stages its fourth annual Guyana Cup horserace meet Sunday August 29.
Jockeys would be competing for more than ten million dollars in prizes in what is undoubtedly the richest horse racing event locally. Nine races are carded for the day and already a large number of jockeys have signaled an intention to be a part of the activities.
With the kind of prize money available a very large amount of horses have already indicated their willingness to participate.
Nine races make up the days proceedings and Turfites are expected to come out in their thousands. Most of the animals competing are currently doing good gallops and the word around the various stables suggests that the owners, trainers, grooms and jockeys are leaving no stone unturned in the preparation of their animals. The feature event, the ‘C and Lower’ classification race, will be run over a distance of 1300 meters and offers a first prize of a $1.2M along with the Guyana Cup. Add the second, third and fourth prizes and the total purse surpasses 2.2 million dollars in this race alone.
The co-feature event among the 3 yr olds will see horses born and bred in Guyana and the West Indies over 1300 meters. The winner takes home one million dollars. Then there are two races involving the two year old horses. The first, for 2 yr old West Indian bred horses goes over a distance of 1100M with the winner is set to ride off with $800,000. The other two year old event, for horses born and bred in Guyana goes over a distance of 1100 meters and assures the winner $400,000.
The F class and lower gallop over 1300 meters guarantees a $600,000 purse while the G and lower sprint over 1100 meters has $400,000 on offer.
The H and Lower class champion receives $300,000 while the ‘I and Lower’ champion carts off $200,000. Horses competing in the Division 1&2 category event will be aiming to take away the $100,000 top prize.
