Two Guyanese batsmen were among the top three run-scorers in the recently held Sir Garfield Sobers International Schools cricket tournament in Barbados.
Winston Forrester scored the most runs while his Top Level Academy teammate Abdool Raheem was third in the aggregate and collected a pair of batting pads for his effort.
The 17-year-old Raheem, who captains GYO at the youth level, scored 301 runs from six games and also registered the competition’s only hat-trick on his way to 15 wickets for 48 runs from 32 overs.
Despite the wonderful batting efforts from Forrester and Raheem, Top Level Academy had to settle for a semi-final spot in the 24th annual tournament which was won by Trinidad’s Queens Park Club Coaching School.
Raheem, whose hat-trick was achieved against Trinidad school Presentation College, was the leading all-rounder in the competition and his scores of his 88 against Australian school Oxley College and 66 against Dulwich College of England were high-class innings.
The young cricketer praised the organising of the competition which attracted top school teams from around the world and said the Guyanese represented their country with pride and determination.
Raheem attends the Business School in Brickdam to complement his CXC which he has already secured.
Alfred Mohamed succumbs
‘Cricket Administration in Guyana will be poor with his loss’ say GCA
Friday the 13th will forever be remembered by those close to former Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) executive Alfred Mohamed as a Black Friday.
Mohamed, the father of former Guyana youth cricketer Ricardo Mohamed, passed away last Friday after a brief illness.
The Executives and Members of the Georgetown Cricket Association yesterday offered their heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Mohamed who was involved in the game of cricket in the Georgetown area for more than three decades.
Mohamed played for the Bookers Sports Club which was later re-named Guystac Trade 2 Sports Club and when his playing days were over he distinguished himself by becoming a Cricket Administrator, culminating in him being elected, Chairman of the Competitions Committee of the GCA.
“Mohammed was a tireless worker; always trying to ensure that cricket competitions were started, played and completed as soon as it was convenient to those involved.
Cricket Administration in Guyana will be poorer with the loss of Mohamed,” said Colin Alfred, Public Relations Officer of the GCA.
Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships starts August 18
The Fifth Annual Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships will finally get on the way on August 18 after a long contested battle for sanctioning of the tournament.
The Five Towns Community Center located at 270 Lawrence Avenue, Lawrence New York will again be the host of the fastest growing amateur boxing tournament in the North Eastern region of the United States.
USA BOXING METRO, which is the local sub association that has jurisdiction on the Long Island and New York City region, has been denying the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships and Charities Inc. ( the organization that has ran the tournament in its short four year history) sanctioning of the event. Local organizers sought the assistance of USA BOXING, the governing body of amateur boxing in the United States, to no avail. They then summoned the help of former Baseball Commissioner, Peter Ueberroth, who is now President of the USOC (United States Olympic Committee) and he immediately intervened and brought an end to the saga.
Thanks to the intervention of the USOC, the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships’ tournament remains alive.
The four days tournament has grown precipitously in the past four years where over 300 boxers participated in last year’s event. Boxers from the New England States, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Washington DC and Connecticut have already sent in their applications for the battle of Long Island.
Long Island boxers are guarding their territory and four champions from the Freeport PAL will return to the tournament this year to defend their titles. Joseph Higgins, Coach of the Freeport PAL has been hard at work preparing his young charges for this very competitive tournament. According to Joe “his charges takes this tournament very seriously, they feel no one will come in their house and beat them to become champions of Long Island.” Among the defending champions are Christian Chavez, Titus Williams, Patrick Day, Herve Dueroso, and Kalib Walker.
The Suffolk gyms are being well represented in the tournament. According to Coach Mike Murphy who runs the Veterans Memorial and Atlantic boxing gyms in Shirley, “six of his boxers are returning to the tournament and there will be seven new comers who will be looking to lay claim to the Long Island Amateur Boxing Championships”. Brentwood’s presence will be felt as Coach John Carter, who runs the Suffolk PAL enters fourteen of his young aspiring boxers in the Fifth Annual Long Amateur Boxing Championships.
Weigh in for boxers will take place at 5:30 PM on all four nights and the first bout starts at 7:30 PM sharp. For ticketing information, log on to www.liamateurboxing.com. Guyanese Michael Carryll, senior official of the USA BOXING METRO, has been the driving force in organising this tournament.
