Team Guyana battle Canadafor Kumite Bronze today
By Sean Devers
The flags of the 12 competing countries fluttered merrily in the breeze outside the Cliff Anderson National Sports Hall yesterday while inside the venue a vocal crowd which included Acting Sports Minister Irfaan Ali and National Cricket Captain Ramnaresh Sarwan witnessed competition on the opening day of the 11th ISKF Pan American Karate Championships in Guyana.
Urged on by their flag-waving supporters, team Guyana defeated Jamaica before losing to favourites USA in the Adults team Kumite competition and will face Canada today for the Bronze medal.
USA and Barbados will battle for the Gold on the final day of the competition today but Captain of team Guyana Patrick Cheeks told Kaieteur Sport that he was satisfied with the home team’s performance.
“It was pleasing to win our first game against Jamaica and we knew USA, who are the 2010 Goodwill Champions are a hell of a team. The USA is the toughest team in the competition while Barbados is also very good so if we can beat Canada tomorrow (today) to win a Bronze Medal we could all be proud of ourselves,” Cheeks said.
Cheeks said the Guyanese five-man team stands a very good chance against the Canadians today.
“We saw them (Canada) play in Philadelphia in June in the Goodwill games and although we (Guyana) did not compete in the Kumite in that competition we know what to expect,” Cheeks disclosed.
Despite not competing yesterday, the three-man Guyana team also advanced to today’s finals of the Adult Kata competition since all the teams progressed due to the small number of competitors in this category.
Many in the local Karate fraternity have commended the team’s performance yesterday since it was this country’s juniors who were expected to give Guyana the most glory in the competition due to the lack of exposure of the Adults.
Caribbean champion in her age-group, Christina Cheeks is expected to lead the charge of the Guyanese juniors in the individual category today while hopes of more Guyana success will rest on Shane Rahaman, the only Guyanese to qualify for the Kumite finals in the 14-15 age-group division.
At press time, matches in the individual category were still being contested but Eric Ming was already in winner’s row in the 16-17 age group of the senior individual Kumite when he defeated Trinidad and Tobago’s Marc Mollenthiel.
Fourteen-year-old Trinidadian Joseph Nevit, who was probably inspired by the presence of Sarwan and who is hoping to meet Guyana’s latest 20/20 sensation Jonathon Foo
before he departs on Tuesday, was also dominant in his matches yesterday.
Watched by his father, a former T&T Ruby player, his mother and sister, Nevit fought unbeaten in the junior individual Kumite competition on the opening day.
Final action is scheduled to commence at 09:00hrs today with the official opening ceremony and will conclude this evening with the presentation of awards.
This is the first time in 21 years that the Pan American Karate Championships is being held in Guyana and it is being hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports and the Guyana Karate Club.
