Christopher Franklin and Natalie Cummings topped the men’s and women’s categories in the just-concluded Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) senior trials at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Franklin defeated Denzil Hopkinson at 11-7,11-8,11-7, Edinho Lewis at 7-11,14-12, 11-4,10-12 and 11-7, Paul Meusa at 11-5,11-3,11-4 and Nigel Bryan at 11-7,8-11,11-5 and 11-5.
There was a three-way tie between Lewis, Meusa and Bryan, however, the second place went to Lewis +1 as Meusa took third place with Bryan fourth. Hopkinson finished in the fifth position.
Natalie Cummings defeated Ambrose Thomas at 11-8,11-5,11-3, Chelsea Edghill at 11-8,11-6,6-11,10-12 ,11-7 and Akeicia Nedd at 11-7,11-9,11-8. Second place went to Edghill who defeated Nedd 11-9, 11-7, 11-8 and Thomas at 12-10,11-4,11-8. Nedd defeated Thomas at 11-8, 11-13, 11-8 and 13-11 for third place.
The Executive members of the GTTA witnessed the trials, and the president, Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene continued his tradition of rewarding players financially when he handed out sums of cash to Franklin and Cummings.
The Selection Committee of the GTTA will meet next Thursday to select the players for the Commonwealth Games in India, which is scheduled for October.
Football Referees training programme slated for Sunday
Local referees will attend a training programme on Sunday geared at bringing the officials up to date with rules of the game and ways of handling infringements.
The programme has been organized by Guyana Football Referees Council (GFRC) ahead of next month’s Fitness Run.
The training session will take place at Hooters Bar at Hardina Street starting at 10:30 hours.
Referees are expected from Linden, Berbice, West Demerara, East Demerara, Bartica, East Bank Demerara and Georgetown.
Course Coordinator, Roy Mc Arthur disclosed there will be presentations on serious foul play, violent conduct, deliberate handball, players’ equipment and analysis of match incidents.
Presentations will be made by McArthur and Lawrence “Sparrow” Griffith, two of the country’s leading referees assessors who recently attended a FUTURO 111 Referees’ Course in Jamaica.
GFF Super 8 KO Competition concludes with Alpha United facing Victoria Kings
Alpha United and Victoria Kings will oppose each other when the curtains are drawn in the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Super 8 KO Competition slated for Sunday August 15 next at the Georgetown Football Club Ground.
The action gets underway at 20:00 hrs shortly after the 3rd place playoff between the GDF and Camptown concludes. That match begins at 18:00 hrs.
Meanwhile, action in the second round of the Super League commences on Sunday August 22 with 5 games between the nation’s top teams while the Women Inter Association 2nd round matches will commence on Sunday September 12 with 2 games.
