Dear Editor,
I write in condemnation of the remarks made by the Hon. Member of Parliament (MP), Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan in Kaieteur News and the manner in which you have reported on his motion.
The MP, in my view has breached some sacred principles of which he has been a practitioner. Kaieteur News (2010-8-10) has quoted MP Ramjattan saying that the Ministers (Irfan Ali and Ashni Singh) lied to the Parliament and your headline has screamed, “Housing Minister committed to stand Parliamentary ‘trial’. This headline and the utterances of Mr. Ramjattan convey the impression that my colleagues have been convicted of serious wrong-doing.
The Speaker reported that, in his opinion, a prima facie case has not been made out against Minister Singh and with respect to Minister Ali he (the Speaker) has agreed that the matter be referred to the Privileges Committee.
When one reads the quotations from MP Ramjattan, in the Kaieteur News, he has tried and convicted both Ministers of lying to Parliament. The motion against Minister Singh was dismissed and the one against Minister Ali has gone to the Privileges Committee, but that is not a conviction.
An appropriate headline would have been
Motion against Minister Singh dismissed!
Ali to appear before Privileges Committee!!
My colleagues and I have full confidence in Minister Ali and affirm that he will be exonerated of any matters brought against him.
Manzoor Nadir MP
NIS needs to be more considerate of Kwakwani’s pensioners
Dear Editor,
There is a saying that a society can be judged by the way it treat its elderly, very young and its women.
Please permit me to highlight the plight of the pensioners who are mostly old bauxite employees in the Kwakwani community.
These pensioners have paid their national insurance contributions in the early stage of their lives and are now receiving the reward for making the required contributions.
It is a requirement for them to submit a life certificate periodically to ensure they can continue to receive their NIS pension.
When Bermine was in operation, some form of arrangement was in place for these pensioners to collect their pension books in Kwakwani. And even after Bermine closed operation, there were frequent visits by NIS personnel to the community, distributing pension books and assisting pensioners in whatever way possible.
The service by NIS Linden branch office during those times could have being considered to be very commendable, when one take the cost of travelling to and from Kwakwani and the amount of pension to be collected into consideration.
Our old age pensioners should never be required to travel the tortuous Kwakwani-Linden trail, a journey that costs $4,200 return and takes over three hours to collect their meager pension or do business at the Linden branch office.
NIS can do better by sending an officer to Kwakwani on a schedule visit every other month or better still refund these pensioners their passage if they are asked to visit the office when the officer’s schedule cannot be fulfilled.
We as a people must take a stand and demand that our elderly are given the best of treatment so that when we become of age, the treatment given to us will be such that we will be comfortable.
