Defending champions Guyana got off to an enterprising start in their Primary Schools Windball Cricket Championship against Trinidad and Tobago when they coasted to consecutive victories on Tuesday evening and yesterday, at two different venues to lead the Series 2-0.
Playing at the National Gymnasium on Tuesday night in a game reduced to 12 overs due to a late start, Guyana romped to a commanding 9 wickets win, while in yesterday’s encounter they won by 7 wickets at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac.
At the National Gymnasium, Guyana won the toss and sent the opposition into take first strike and they compiled 106 in 9.3 overs with Leandra Ramdeen hitting a top-score of 46, while Captain Renelle Dookie supported with 12.
Bowling for the hosts, Nyasha Carrington grabbed 2-1 off 3 balls, while Tiffany Skinner took 2-19 from 2 overs.
In their turn at the crease, Guyana reached the victory target for the loss of just one wicket, closing on 107-1 in 7.3 overs.
Carrington returned to slam a belligerent undefeated 59, while Patricia Primus was there with her at the end on 24.
Dookie picked up the lone wicket to fall for the cost of 31 runs from 2 overs.
In the second match, T&T won the toss and decided to bat first and they were dismissed for a paltry 99 in 15.1 overs with Dookie once again among the runs, top-scoring with 23 and Alexsie Ali 10 not out.
Carrington continued her good form in the Series this time bagging 3-12 off 2 overs. Cassie Jhingoree and Andrika Mickle took two wickets apiece.
Chasing a target of 100 for victory, Guyana finished on 100-3 in 13 overs.
Latoya Garraway hammered an unbeaten 54, while Nickesha Singh hit 13 not out.
Game 3 is set for today at the National Cultural Centre Tarmac.

Priyanna Ramdhani becomes youngest player to reach semis

An emotional Gokarn Ramdhani, Coach of the National Badminton team in the Dominican Republic told Kaieteur Sport yesterday from Santo Domingo that he was overjoyed that Guyana had finally notched up its first Pan American games medal in Badminton.
Eight-year-old Priyanna Ramdhani reached the Semifinals in the Mixed Doubles in the Under-11 event on Tuesday to become the youngest player ever reach so far in a Pan American Championships as the Individual Championships of the XIX Pan American Junior Championships continued.
“This is the first time in Guyana’s Badminton history that we are getting a Medal after only two years playing. I am so happy and proud right now,” an elated Ramdhani said.
The Coach who has been the driving force behind Guyana’s Badminton since he was among the top national players at the Yonnex Badminton club in the 1980s, said Guyana’s medal is reward for all the hard work put in and the accomplishment is even sweeter since he is also the father of the talented pint-size Priyanna.
Priyanna teamed up with Jamaican Jourdan Hydol Smith to whip the Brazilian pair of FDe Lemos and Luanna Capuli 21-13, 21-14 to advance to last evening’s semis to secure at least a Bronze medal.
Last night was the final night of action and the Presentation ceremony and Ramdhani was keeping his fingers crossed that his daughter would make her country even prouder by winning the semifinal match to move up to a Sliver Medal before ‘winning the whole thing’ to take Gold.
“I will try to keep you posted on tomorrow night’s results but if Priyanna goes on to win the Gold I might be so drunk with delight and excitement that I might be in another world,” an excited Ramdhani said.
Meanwhile, in results coming to hand later yesterday, Priyanna Ramdhani got third in the under-11 mixed Doubles.
