Guyana claimed three medals at the CAC championships even as Randolph Morgan claimed the best lifter accolade.
Junior lifter from Essequibo Kenneth Melville lifting in the Men’s open 110kg class gained bronze behind Harold Milan of Puerto Rico (gold) and Marcos Porras of Mexico (silver).
He recorded a personal best total of 705kgs which incidentally was 2.5kgs more than fellow compatriot and Caribbean gold medalist Farouk Abdool and in the process establishing new National Junior records of squat 270kgs and deadlift 282.5kg (bettering Julian Sinclair’s mark of squat 245kg and deadlift 245kg set in 2008).
Richard Mark Seymour lifting in the same class suffered the misfortune of failing all three of his dead lifts thus rendering him ineligible for medaling.
Randolph Morgan claimed the CAC best lifter title after winning the same award in the Caribbean event. He along with Winston Stoby had earlier won gold in their respective classes
Despite fielding just four lifters Guyana was able gain 5th place out of nine countries with full strength teams of 8 – 10 lifters.
In the NAPF event, Kenneth Melville lifting in the Junior 110kg class won his head to head clash against Luis Moreira of Puerto Rico easily but was awarded a silver medal as a result of the organisers placing all of the juniors from 90kg – 125+Kgs into one category to be determined by the Overall Wilks total format which saw the lighter Ramon Burgos of Puerto Rico 90kgs gaining gold with a Wilks total of 520 to Kenneth Melville’s 110kg Wilks total of 425.
According to a release from the Powerlifting Federation, the sport in Guyana has been very unfortunate thru lack of meaningful sponsorship and financing to properly challenge for team glory.
They have shown what they are capable of when they captured the Caribbean Championships men’s team title at home, fielding a full strength 10 man squad. Incidentally Trinidad and Tobago fielded the same squad at the CAC Games through financing from their Government to gain Bronze.
The team is expected to be back home by week end.

“DDL has supported the development of sports in Guyana and is very pleased to be associated with the KMTC once again. We have been supporting events organized by the turf club for a number of years and we are happy to do so once again” Marques said.
“This race meeting will be an exciting one, so it would be amiss of me if I don’t take this opportunity to invite fans to the venue on Sunday to witness a day of exciting racing, while at the same time, urge them to drink responsibly,” he added.
Justice Cecil Kennard thanked the sponsors for their timely contribution on behalf of the Executives of the horse racing club.
“On behalf of the executives of the KMTC, I would like to extend my gratitude to the management of DDL for coming on board. Most sporting activities cannot go ahead without sponsorship and I am extremely happy,” Kennard indicated.
“I know that the sponsors would be getting maximum mileage, which I and the other Executives of the KMTC, are eagerly looking forward to working with the management and staff of DDL in the future” Kennard added yesterday.
All the races will be run under the rules of the Guyana Horse Racing Authority (GHRA) where owners will have to register their horses to be classified. Entries for the upcoming event closed Saturday with owners being asked to pay $3,000 per entry.
